The recently revived discussion on minority business in Memphis is about to go back on the front burner again. Fueling the intensity are new U.S. Census numbers. They show the percentage of business receipts in Memphis produced by black-owned businesses has dropped since the 2007 census numbers showed a 1.08 percent share of those receipts by black-owned businesses. That in a city whose population is 63 percent African-American.
The drop to below one percent is even though the overall receipts in 2012 were higher than they were in 2007.

Twelve Memphis ad agencies are headed to the national level of the American Advertising Awards after bringing home 29 awards at the regional level.

It marks the highest number of local participants at the national level in recent years, said Andrea Wiley, AAF Memphis’ incoming president. The agencies were recognized at an April 10 regional event in Knoxville after their digital, print and outdoor campaigns were judged against peers from across Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia.

15. Loaded For Bear Wins Best of Show at American Advertising Awards -

Creative directors from Boston, Las Vegas and New York were charged with judging 675 entries in the AAF Memphis 48th annual American Advertising Awards for creative excellence. The judges were so impressed by the quality of work that they created four additional “Best Of” awards, which recognize the top work of the year.

Memphis businessman Billy Orgel has the Tennessee Brewery under contract to buy.

He told The Commercial Appeal he wants to preserve the structure and is open to any idea that helps accomplish that. But Orgel, a founder of Tower Ventures, is not answering any more questions for now.

31. Time for ‘New ERA’ in Memphis -

Statistically, we know that talented workers are vital to any city’s economy. Cities need creative, enthusiastic, entrepreneurial citizens to start businesses, buy homes, send their kids to school and do all of the things that people do to create value in neighborhoods. When talented people “opt-out” of one city in favor of another, for any reason, some cities win while others lose. It’s no secret that Memphis has been on the losing end of this equation for quite some time.

39. Memphis in May Seeks Local Swedes for Festival -

The 37th annual Memphis in May International Festival is a salute to Sweden, a country whose climate differs greatly from the host town but perhaps has some parallels in its rich history.

“The joke about Sweden is that nobody’s really from Sweden except for the Vikings and they’re long gone,” said Diane Hampton, executive vice president of Memphis in May. “But they all came there from other places. It’s kind of a melting pot of cultures as well – and a cold melting pot.”

40. South Main’s New Life -

The history of the South Main Historic Arts District is as colorful as its present-day users, an alternating rhythm of sorts in Memphis’ songbook.

The area has oscillated from its ritzy suburban roots of the 1800s to the industrial era ghost town of the 20th century and now to its current status as Downtown’s flourishing arts and boutique district and the subject of some $100 million in investment. And it’s all due to stakeholders who braved the status quo in distinguishing the southern end of the Central Business District as that funky place with an indescribable vibe.

Video artist Chris Miner says one way to explain the redevelopment of the Sears Crosstown building is likening it to the process of creating art.

“You get into it with a general idea of what you want to do, but then you kind of let it take you wherever you are going to go or wherever the piece wants to go,” he said.

The historic Sears Crosstown building in Midtown Memphis is being redeveloped as a mixed-used vertical urban village, with nine “founding partners” in local health care, education and arts organizations that have signed on to occupy 600,000 square feet of the total 1.4 million square feet of space.

46. Hayes Returns to PR Following Role in Wharton Administration -

Kerry Hayes knows a thing or two about what makes a city tick.

He spent nearly three years as special assistant to Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr., where he focused on research and innovation. Hayes led the effort to secure a $4.8 million grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, allowing Wharton to establish an “Innovation Delivery Team” of researchers to reduce handgun violence and accelerate economic development in the inner city.

Fans of professional tennis in Memphis have got a lot to look forward to.

That’s according to Mike Lehr, the executive vice president of business development for Sharks Sports and Entertainment and part of an investment group that owns The Racquet Club of Memphis as well as the ATP tour championship event the club hosts each February, which draws some of the top players from around the world.

In 2008, something was brewing in the area near Cleveland and Watkins streets south of Poplar Avenue in Midtown.

A developer, Tom Marsh, working with Florida-based WSG Development, had unveiled plans for a mixed-use development to include small and large retail, including a Target store, condominiums, apartments and medical offices, along with all-around improvements to the neighborhood known as Crosstown.

The Great Recession made for one hard winter, but industry watchers are pointing to some fresh signs of life.

70. Local Ownership Group Buys Tennis Club for $4.4M -

Tennis Club of Memphis LLC, a partnership led by Doug Carpenter and Brian Sullivan of the carpenter | sullivan | sossaman advertising firm, has bought The Racquet Club at Memphis at 5111 Sanderlin Ave. in East Memphis for $4.4 million. The amount was almost a quarter less than the Shelby County Assessor of Property’s 2008 appraisal of $5.7 million.

ATLANTA (AP) - A $20 billion deal to combine Delta Air Lines Inc. and Northwest Airlines Corp. was in "serious jeopardy" by press time because the pilots unions from both companies were unable to reach an agreement on blending their seniority lists, two people close to talks told The Associated Press.
