NEW YORK (AP) – U.S. Bancorp said Thursday it will pay $613 million in fines and penalties to settle allegations that the bank had poor anti-money laundering controls, which put the bank repeatedly at risk of being used as a conduit for criminals.

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) – A Mississippi bank has won approval to complete mergers with Louisiana and Texas banks that were delayed for nearly four years.

BancorpSouth announced Wednesday that it intends to complete the acquisitions of Ouachita Independent Bank and First State Bank Central Texas by Jan. 15. The Tupelo-based bank says it finally been approved by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and Mississippi banking regulators.

One of the two federal court lawsuits alleging illegal police surveillance of protesters by Memphis Police has been dropped. It is the lawsuit filed by “Fight for $15” activists and that campaign’s Mid-South Organizing Committee. It comes with something for both sides. The city still denies illegal surveillance of protesters. And the activists get a settlement letter that states police will not conduct surveillance on three of the activists by name, without probable cause. The lawsuit was dismissed this week by federal judge Sheryl Lipman without prejudice meaning it could be refiled.

23. Pinnacle, BNC Shareholders Approve $1.9B Merger -

Shareholders of Pinnacle Financial Partners and BNC Bancorp have both approved a $1.9 billion merger of the two banks, which is expected to close soon.

Nashville-based Pinnacle, parent company of Pinnacle Bank, currently is building its Memphis headquarters in Boyle Investment Co.’s new Class A office building in Ridgeway Center in East Memphis. Pinnacle will be the building’s anchor tenant with signage rights, and plans to occupy 35,000 square feet in the 155,000-square-foot facility, along with two drive-thru banking lanes and an ATM lane on the ground floor.

BancorpSouth earned $37.8 million in net income for the third quarter, up from $34.3 million during the third quarter of 2015, the bank has reported.

Among other highlights for the quarter, the bank generated deposit growth of $225.7 million and net loan growth of $82.8 million. It had no recorded provision for credit losses for the quarter, and it repurchased 551,519 shares of its common stock.

The National Fair Housing Alliance on Tuesday, Oct. 15, amended a complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, alleging U.S. Bank failed to maintain and market properties in minority neighborhoods, while paying special care to its homes in predominantly white neighborhoods. The national nonprofit housing alliance said its investigation found that the bank’s properties in predominantly minority neighborhoods were much more likely to have structural and aesthetic problems than its homes in white neighborhoods.

The Treasury Department announced Friday the results of its latest auction of its preferred stock in small banks. The government sold its shares for $5.1 million less than its original investment in the four banks of $67.5 million. But overall the Treasury says the investment was profitable after counting $12.1 million in dividends it received from the banks, for total income of $74.5 million.
