The Greater Memphis Chamber has applied for state improvement grants for nine economic development sites in Memphis as the first step in a “Sites and Buildings Plan.”

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – Arkansas officials have denied a request by some farmers to lift the state's ban on in-crop dicamba use.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that the state Plant Board rejected the farmers' request on Tuesday. Board members say the farmers provided no new information that would change their minds on the issue.

BRUSSELS (AP) – Facebook said Thursday it will not compensate users in the scandal over the misuse of their personal data by political consultancy Cambridge Analytica.

The company made the statement in a list of written replies to questions by European Union lawmakers. The answers were promised after testimony earlier this week by CEO Mark Zuckerberg in Brussels had left EU lawmakers frustrated about a lack of responses.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) – The anticipation of legal sports gambling throughout the United States has prompted a flurry of deals among gambling and technology firms who want a foothold in a market worth billions.

21. Legal Sports Betting a Gamble for All -

The most impactful sports score of the week was this one: a 6-3 U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down the federal law prohibiting sports gambling everywhere but in Nevada.

Going forward, the states can decide if they want to enter the legal sports betting marketplace. Mississippi is one of the few that appears to be in position to make the move sooner rather than later. Allen Godfrey, Mississippi Gaming Commission director, has said sports betting could be in the state’s casinos before the start of football season.

Grizz president of business operations Jason Wexler had probably the best reaction on Twitter: “So for the next 5 weeks we are in a window where everyone can be wrong and everyone can be right at the same time.” The memory of Hasheem Thabeet’s arrival in Memphis looms large in this uncertainty and draft day is the only thing that can make that memory fade. At least for now, that image just got a bit sharper. And it becomes more vivid every time between now and the draft in June that you start a sentence with “The Grizz could still…”

American Queen Steamboat Co. has moved its Memphis headquarter to New Albany, Indiana, in what the riverboat cruise company describes as “an effort to synergize shoreside operations with parent company HMS Global Maritime.”

24. Spinosa Takes Chamber Job, Resigns from City Council -

Philip Spinosa Jr. has resigned from the Memphis City Council and been named the new senior vice president of the Greater Memphis Chamber’s Chairman’s Circle.

Spinosa will replace Shea Flinn, who announced he would be vacating his position in March. Much like Spinosa, Flinn left his post on the City Council in 2015 to join the chamber.

26. Arkansas Court Halts 4th Judge's Order on Dicamba Ban -

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – The Arkansas Supreme Court has halted a fourth judge's ruling exempting some farmers from an herbicide ban that took effect last week.

Justices on Monday stayed a Clay County judge's order prohibiting the state Plant Board from enforcing its ban on dicamba against a group of farmers in that county.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – Arkansas' highest court has halted orders by two judges exempting some farmers from the state's ban of an herbicide that took effect last week.

The state Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed temporary restraining orders issued by judges in Phillips and Mississippi counties preventing the state from enforcing its ban on dicamba on groups of farmers in those counties.

NEW YORK (AP) – Anyone who's been wondering if their private Facebook data might have been swept up in the Cambridge Analytica scandal will soon get their first clues.

Starting Monday, all 2.2 billion Facebook users will receive a notice on their feeds, titled "Protecting Your Information," with a link to see what apps they use and what information they have shared with those apps. If they want, they can shut off apps individually or turn off third-party access to their apps completely.

39. Lawsuits Over Herbicide Dicamba to Be Heard in St. Louis -

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – A special panel of judges says 11 lawsuits filed in four states against the makers of the herbicide dicamba will be centralized in federal court in St. Louis.

The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation made the determination Thursday regarding farmers' lawsuits filed in Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Illinois. The lawsuits argue that the makers of dicamba are responsible for damage caused by the herbicide to their crops, especially soybeans.

40. Chamber to Host Free MWBE Certification Fair on Jan. 23 -

In an effort to generate more certified minority and women-owned businesses in Shelby County, the Greater Memphis Chamber will host its first joint certification fair with the county on Jan. 23.

At the event, which will be held at the 6200 Poplar Ave. Regions Bank branch from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., minority and women business owners will be able to take advantage of a free and streamlined certification process.

42. Lawsuit Over Arkansas Dicamba Ban Moot, State Says in Filing -

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – Attorneys for the state of Arkansas say a lawsuit challenging a ban on the herbicide dicamba is now moot because the ban is no longer in place.

Monsanto has asked for preliminary and permanent injunctions as part of a lawsuit against the state Plant Board, which voted in November to prohibit the in-crop use of dicamba from April 16 through Oct. 31 next year.

43. Arkansas Lawmakers Ask Panel to Reconsider Dicamba Ban -

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – Arkansas lawmakers on Tuesday recommended a regulatory panel look at revising its proposed ban of an herbicide farmers in several states say has drifted onto their crops and caused damage, nearly a month after a maker of the weed killer asked a judge to halt the prohibition.

44. Tenn. Agriculture Department Proposes New Dicamba Rules -

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture is proposing new rules for the use of herbicides containing dicamba in the production of cotton and soybeans.

TDA is seeking approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for a 24(c) “special local needs” label to further restrict the use of new-formulation products in Tennessee, including BASF’s Engenia, Monsanto’s XtendiMax and DuPont’s FeXapan.

The big reveal at the Greater Memphis Chamber’s annual luncheon Wednesday, at least for me – Dale Watson lives in Memphis now. The Americana musician, producer and author was among the performers at the Peabody and he had a bit of trouble getting the group of 700 business and political leaders to sing along with the refrain of one of his most popular tunes – “I Lie When I Drink and I Drink A Lot" -- with at least a dozen video cameras panning the room. But he continued on without audience participation. Other entertainment highlights featured Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland as the voice of Amazon’s Alexa.

The Greater Memphis Chamber has set a goal of 600 new business-to-business contracts for minority- and women-owned enterprises and locally-owned firms by the end of the year.
