Supermarkets are hard. That is the tag line in every discussion about getting a supermarket or grocery store for a given part of town that doesn’t have one. And once a new supermarket goes up somewhere else, there is inevitably word that a competitor or two is going to build nearby. The discussion always includes the mandatory recitation of the 3 to 4 percent profit margin stores operate on, which even knowledgeable critics of the decisions about where to locate and not to locate stores acknowledge is accurate.

2. Real Men Wear Pink Campaign Raises $145K in Memphis -

The American Cancer Society’s Real Men Wear Pink campaign, which selected 27 prominent Memphis men to raise funds for breast cancer awareness in October, garnered $145,000 for the society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer initiative.

3. Local Wealth Managers Put Service Above Self -

Service over self is the Rotarian creed, and one that local wealth manager William (Bill) Pickens, has embraced in his life.

As founder of Gift of Life International’s local chapter, Gift of Life Mid-South – an organization that brings children with congenital heart defects from developing countries to Memphis to undergo lifesaving surgery – Pickens has put his mantra to work in tangible ways.

Rotary Club of Memphis Central will meet Friday from 11:45 to 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, University of Memphis. Tracy Chism will speak about the Gift of Life program, which provides heart surgeries to children in 3rd world countries. $20 non-members. RSVP to Karen Shea, 683-9099.

The Rotary Club of Memphis Central will meet Friday from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn University of Memphis, 3700 Central Ave. Tracy Chism will speak about the Gift of Life program, which provides heart surgeries to children in Third World countries. Cost is $20 for nonmembers. For reservations, call Karen Shea at 683-9099.

7. County Commission To Vote on Appointments -

The Shelby County Board of Commissioners is expected today to approve several appointments to boards and commissions.

Among the approvals that are expected are Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton Jr.’s nomination of Tracy R. Chism for appointment to the Shelby County Health, Education and Housing Facility Board. Also on the slate are Wharton’s nominations of Anthony Tate and Lee Askew III for appointment to the Shelby County Healthcare Corp. and Michael Adrian Davis and Marc E. Willis for appointment to the Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission.
