Three Memphis women who have dedicated their lives to improving life in the city they call home will be honored for their contributions this week.

The Rev. Sonia Louden Walker, Anita S. Vaughn and Fredrika “Freddi” Felt will be the recipients at this year’s Legends Awards sponsored by the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis (WFGM).

1997: The grand opening of Wolfchase Galleria, which at 1.1 million square feet is larger than the other five Memphis malls open at the time: the Mall of Memphis, Hickory Ridge Mall, Raleigh Springs Mall, Southland Mall and Southbrook Mall. Wolfchase opens with more than 130 tenants, including an eight-screen movie theater, plus 6,000 parking spaces. By comparison, the Mall of Memphis has 885,627 square feet.

4. Women’s Foundation Has 2-Generation Approach to Reduce Poverty in 38126 - Thursday, October 27, 2016

The Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis has a big goal to reduce poverty by 5 percent over the next five years in the 38126 ZIP code in South Memphis.

Its Vision 2020 Strategic Plan is how it will tackle that challenge head on. And on Thursday, Oct. 27, the foundation will hold Power of the Purse, a combination silent and live auction event benefitting the Vision 2020 effort. The event takes place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at The University Club of Memphis.

Reese Witherspoon’s flagship boutique, Draper James, opened last week in the 12South area, and the reception was all Nashville.

Musical performances by Lee Ann Womack and Ruby Amanfu kept guests like Faith Hill, Reba McEntire, Sheryl Crow, Mayor Megan Barry, Kacey Musgraves and Lily Aldridge entertained while they shopped (perhaps for the holidays?) and milled around the store’s back parking lot, which was transformed into a charming, Southern-style party.

9. Handful Of Music Festivals Set For August - Monday, August 10, 2015

In March, one of James Sposto’s friends posted to his Facebook page a thought about being a musician in Memphis.

Daniel McKee, a bassist who’s done turns in a few different bands, lamented that he’s never had a chance to play at the Levitt Shell. Sposto, a digital media entrepreneur in Memphis, used that as a catalyst to start preparing for something he’d already had been thinking about making happen – putting on a show that celebrates and supports the local Memphis music he’s a fan of.
