1. Hattiloo Forum Explores Black Generation Gap -

Always looking for a good topic of conversation, Hattiloo Theatre founder Ekundayo Bandele decided to put a group of millennials and active senior citizens together.

The Tuesday, Oct. 13, event was prompted by a dinner conversation Bandele had with his 21-year-old daughter.

2. Bolding is Only Tennessean to Teach at 2015 NeighborWorks Institute -

Tim Bolding, executive director of United Housing Inc., is the only Tennessean selected to teach at NeighborWorks America’s 2015 NeighborWorks Training Institute. Bolding has taught coursework at the training institutes, which focus on providing high-quality training to nonprofit housing professionals, for more than 10 years.

3. LaVeist to Keynote Common Table Health Alliance Fundraiser -

There have been other projects – going back many years – that explored the impact of health disparities in the United States.

But as Common Table Health Alliance CEO Renee S. Frazier notes, the disparities still exist. So there is reason for a new project such as the documentary “The Skin You’re In.” It’s the work of Thomas LaVeist, who is director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solutions.

4. ‘State of Black Memphis’ Forum Urges Action -

Each year, the Urban League releases a national report that puts the “state of Black America” in the form of statistics on health care, education, economic power and similar factors.

This year, the Memphis Urban League Young Professionals used the report’s release to start a discussion billed as the “state of Black Memphis.”

5. Eureka Encourages Girls to Explore STEM Fields -

A small group of girls huddled around a car-like robot with long sensors as they worked on making sure the car will be able to complete a programmed route at an exhibition next week.

“Try this in front Dennisha,” said Ashley Jones, as she handed Dennisha Williams a small gray wheel.

6. MAAR Elects Board Members -

Members of the Memphis Area Association of Realtors elected six individuals to the 2013-2014 board of directors at its annual meeting and election Sept. 6.

They are: 2013 director/2014 vice president Patty Rainey of Crye-Leike Inc. Realtors; 2013-2014 directors Cassandra Bell-Warren of 4 Success Realty LLC, Allen Green of John Green & Co. Realtors, Joe Steffner of Grubb & Ellis/Memphis, and Hank Hogue of Crye-Leike; and 2013-2014 associate director Jason Gaia of Prudential Collins-Maury Inc.

7. Women's Foundation Names Board Members -

The Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis has named new members to its 2011-2012 board of directors.

They are Meri Armour, president and CEO, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital; Toni L. Boland, sustainable business and innovation specialist, Nike Inc.; Carolyn Hardy, president and CEO, Chism Hardy Enterprises LLC; Gretchen W. McLennon, program officer, Hyde Family Foundations; Nisha Powers, majority owner and president, Powers Hill Design LLC; and Stacie Waddell, philanthropist.

8. Hubbard Selected to Serve as MAAR President-Elect -

Regina Hubbard of Lester Hubbard Realtors has been selected as the 2012 president-elect of the Memphis Area Association of Realtors after a vote by the 2011 and 2012 board of directors Wednesday, Sept. 21.

9. Leadership Memphis Announces Board Members -

Leadership Memphis has announced new board members and officers for its new fiscal year.

The officers and executive committee include Eric Robertson, chair; Beverly Jordan, vice chair; Bryan Ford, treasurer; Veronica Coleman Davis, secretary; Chris McLean, immediate past chair; Jeff Gaudino, alumni chair; Christine Munson, development chair; Lemoyne Robinson, program chair; and Jeane Chapman, marketing chair.

10. Women’s Foundation Announces Board Members -

The Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis has announced its board of directors for 2010-2011.

Officers and members of the executive committee are Becky Jones West, chair of the board; Andrea Bienstock, secretary; Mary Wolff, treasurer and finance chair; Celie Althoff, policies and procedures chair; Beverly Cross, grants and research chair; Karen Garrison Goff, development chair; Lauryce Graves-McIver, board development and nominations chair; Mary H. McDaniel, at-large; Jennifer Oswalt, at-large; Susan Stephenson, Memphis HOPE development chair; Joyce Thomas, marketing and communications chair; Anita S. Vaughn, human resources chair; and Regina Walker, education and training chair.

11. Whalum and Webb Draw Challengers In School Board Races -

Memphis school board members Betty Mallott and Martavius Jones were unopposed at Thursday’s filing deadline for the four Memphis school board races on the Nov. 2 ballot. Noon was the deadline for candidates to file their qualifying petitions in the school board races as well as three sets of municipal elections in Bartlett, Collierville and Germantown.

12. Lowery Transition Team In Place -

Incoming Memphis Mayor Myron Lowery has named his transition team.

The five member team will be headed by City Council member Bill Boyd who is a former city division director, heading the Public Services division under Mayor Wyeth Chandler. The district two representative assisted in another city political transition in the 1960s. As a city employee, Boyd was part of the transition of city government to the then new City Hall in 1967.

14. Simpson Joins FirstBank As Local President -

Ted Simpson has been hired by FirstBank as its Memphis city president.

Simpson previously served as executive vice president and chief lending officer for Magna Bank and has experience with National Bank of Commerce and Central Park Capital. He also is currently on the board of Lambda Alpha, a real estate professional organization.

15. Stephanie Nichols Named PRSA Professional of the Year -

The Memphis chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) honored Stephanie Wilson Nichols as its 2006 Professional of the Year during the 15th annual VOX Awards Gala. This is the second time Nichols has received the award. The first time was in 2000. She served as the VOX Awards committee chair this year, and in 2005 was the chapter president. She also assisted the VOX committee in 2005. Nichols has earned and maintained her PRSA Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) designation since 2000 and has been an active member of PRSA since 1993.

16. National News Correspondent Lends Celebrity to YWCA Fund-Raiser -

The YWCA of Greater Memphis bills itself as one of the greatest advocates for women and girls in the Memphis and Mid-South. And YWCA officials say they hope getting a little celebrity support will help shed the light on all the organization does.

17. Bethel Named New VP Of COMEC Board -

Greg Bethel has been named vice president of the board of directors of the Commission on Missing & Exploited Children (COMEC). Bethel is the director of human resources for the Jackson-Madison County School System in Jackson, Tenn. He's been on the board of directors for two years.

19. Newberry Takes Helm of MLGW's Credit Union -

Ken Newberry has been named the president and chief executive officer of LG&W Federal Credit Union, which serves immediate family members, employees and retired employees of Memphis Light, Gas & Water Division. Newberry is the second vice president of the Memphis chapter of the Tennessee Credit Union League and treasurer of the West Tennessee Affiliate of the National Kidney Foundation.

20. Housing Organizations Team Up for Habitat Build -

Church groups, businesses, nonprofits and individuals all take part in builds for Habitat for Humanity. But in the Memphis area, three groups in particular have extra motivation to participate.

The Memphis Area Association of Realtors, Memphis Area Home Builders Association and Memphis Mortgage Bankers Association have teamed up to build a house during this year's fall Habitat building blitz, which began earlier this month.
