The city’s Beale Street Task Force is going to have its next meeting on Beale Street and City Council chairman Berlin Boyd reminded council members Tuesday that if they join the task force on Beale to remember that it is Saturday night at 11 p.m. – not 11 a.m., a more normal hour for such proceedings.

2006: Shelby County’s reliance on manufacturing jobs is dropping, according to state labor figures, which show that 14 manufacturing companies have closed or cut back their workforces in Shelby County since January 2003. The closings and cutbacks account for the loss of 1,240 jobs.
The losses include 98 jobs at Coors Brewing Co., 5151 East Raines Road; 112 workers at Memphis Hardwood Flooring Co., 1551 Thomas St.; and 327 employees at Great Dane LP at 1095 Harbor Ave.

6. Melzie Wilson Appointed To Commerce Advisory Committee - Wednesday, April 20, 2016

Melzie Wilson, vice president of compliance at Mallory Alexander International Logistics, has been appointed to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Advisory Committee on Supply Chain Competitiveness by secretary of commerce Penny Pritzker. In her role at Mallory Alexander, Wilson is responsible for all government regulations the company must comply with, both in the U.S. and globally.
She’s also responsible, along with a compliance team, for ensuring Mallory Alexander’s clients stay compliant.

7. This week in Memphis history: May 30-June 5 - Saturday, May 31, 2014

2012: The transition planning commission plotting recommendations for the coming schools merger put together a list of $54 million in cuts that could be made to balance the budget of the new school system. But those in the 21-member advisory group emphasized the list was not a recommendation but instead “a reluctant contingency plan.” The recommendations would have gone one student above the Memphis City Schools pupil teacher ratio per classroom.

10. Music Engineers Cut Old Path With Vinyl Recordings - Friday, May 28, 2010

Producing vinyl records – those albums that most people 40 and older grew up with – has rapidly become a lost art as technology has sent that format the way of the 8-track tape.

But a few local music engineers are turning back the clock by refurbishing a Neumann VMS 70 lathe – a machine that is used to cut vinyl discs – that Stax founder Jim Stewart began using in 1970.
