WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump declared he's willing to take on the National Rifle Association over gun legislation, but Republicans who control Congress aren't so sure. They prefer to consider only modest changes to firearms limits in response to the mass shooting at a Florida high school.

5. Final Goodbye: Roll Call of Some Who Died in 2017 -

They made music that inspired legions of fans. Rock 'n' roll founding fathers Chuck Berry and Fats Domino, rockers Tom Petty and Gregg Allman, grunge icon Chris Cornell, country superstar Glen Campbell and jazz great Al Jarreau were among the notable figures who died in 2017, leaving a void in virtually every genre of music.

Hey, Memphis! Fall is definitely in the air now, as the slate of festivals and fun outdoor activities continue to roll on in the Bluff City. Senses, the nightclub on the eastern side of the Poplar viaduct, is back. Apparently it’s been back for a little while but the top code enforcement official involved says it is news to him and may be a violation that puts this matter in Environmental Court.

WASHINGTON (AP) – How often do students miss school? Are they ready for college? Are they physically fit? Is their school a welcoming place?

States are beginning to outline new ways to evaluate their schools, rather than relying just on traditional measures such as test scores.

Builder-developers John Duke, Mike Murphy, Chip Tayloe and Frank Uhlhorn, along with developer Dan Turley, formed a joint venture business to finish out The Enclave, a luxury estate home infill project they saved in Germantown after it had stalled during the Great Recession.

When the school year ends, that’s not necessarily when leaders of school systems can take it easy.

That’s because the business of school systems is about looking months if not years ahead on your mental calendar.

15. North Texas Could Never Upset the Vols, Right? -

No way Tennessee’s football team can lose Saturday’s homecoming game against North Texas, one of the worst teams in college football.

Right?

Tennessee (5-4) was a 40.5-point favorite early in the week coming off a 27-24 victory over South Carolina last Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

16. Fairgrounds’ Future -

It’s hard to imagine that a 65,000-seat stadium could be overlooked. Perhaps it’s because the Liberty Bowl wasn’t in the center of the Mid-South Fairgrounds when the stadium was built in 1965; it was on the eastern side of 155 acres of city-owned land, with a rail spur running along its eastern boundary.

21. Mike Murphy Builders Files Loan for 3 Lots in Enclave -

Mike Murphy Builders LLC has filed a construction loan for three lots in Germantown’s Enclave planned development, phase 3, through Financial Federal Savings Bank for $1.1 million. The sizes of the financed lots are 6,759 square feet fronting Enclave Hollow Lane East, 7,032 square feet fronting Terrene Lane and 6,760 square feet fronting Enclave Green Lane West.

22. Occupy Protests Cost Nation's Cities at Least $13M -

NEW YORK (AP) – During the first two months of the nationwide Occupy protests, the movement that is demanding more out of the wealthiest Americans cost local taxpayers at least $13 million in police overtime and other municipal services, according to a survey by The Associated Press.

23. Memphis Pride Signs Lease At Trinity Ridge -

An up-and-coming Mid-South cheer and tumbling company has signed a new lease to expand its business, a move that will benefit the facility’s students and parents alike.

Memphis Pride is relocating from a 5,000-square-foot space in Cordova Industrial Park to 16,080-square-foot lease at 7740 B Trinity Road, suite 126.

24. Noffsinger Receives Leadership Award -

Mike Noffsinger, sales manager for the Memphis location of the RJ Young Co., has received the John T. Crunk Leadership Award, an honor given to an employee who exhibits outstanding leadership traits and performance during the year.

The Exchange Club Family Center has announced new board members and officers for 2010-2011.

The new board members are Grant Adams, Holly Walters Craft, Adrienne Daily-Evans, Dr. Sheryl Davis, Handel Durham, Joe Fracchia, Dr. Patrick Randolph, Mike Fay, Dr. John Holmes, Shelly Rice and Rick Holland.

NEW YORK (AP) - Wall Street may be roaring again and manufacturers see a bright future selling their wares in Asia. But for many Americans, it's still a downturn until the jobs come back.

This week, earnings from several companies with deep ties to corporate payrolls, consumer demand and the labor market will show whether employers are hiring, firing or holding off on filling vacancies.

29. Ike’s Plans Expansion to Collierville -

A 10,000-square-foot Ike’s drugstore is coming to West Poplar Avenue in Collierville now that the Arkansas-based company that owns and operates the chain has bought the land and announced plans to begin building after the start of the new year.

30. Arkansas Launches Lottery Ticket Sales -

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas launched its lottery early Monday, selling scratch-off tickets that officials say will raise millions of dollars for college scholarships.

The ceremonial first ticket was sold at midnight at a Murphy USA gas station in Little Rock. The ticket was sold to Jim Purcell, director of the state Department of Higher Education.

A few years ago, in the midst of sweeping bank consolidations that brought institutions such as Regions Bank and SunTrust Inc. to the area, the owners and directors of Fidelity National Bank in West Memphis let everyone know they wanted no part of a merger or acquisition.
