After 17 years with Pickering Firm Inc., James Hale has been tapped as one of the architecture and engineering firm’s principal owners. As director of finance and administration, Hale is responsible for overseeing all financial operations of the firm and the day-to-day fiscal management of the company. Hale, who is based in Pickering’s Memphis office, also oversees all accounting and administrative staff, including human resources and IT.

2. Goodin Joins Hagwood Adelman As Memphis Managing Attorney -

Michael T. Goodin has joined Hagwood Adelman Tipton PC as managing attorney of the Memphis office. In that role, he provides legal services to HAT’s clients in matters such as medical malpractice and senior housing litigation for health care providers along the continuum of care, including skilled nursing, assisted living, behavioral health, home health and hospice litigation. In addition, he assists in supervising the attorney and paraprofessional teams.

3. Donahoe Named VP at Avison Young -

Michael Donahoe has joined commercial real estate firm Avison Young as vice president of its Memphis branch. Donahoe’s main focus will be overseeing all of the firm’s landlord leasing projects in Memphis and the surrounding areas. Toronto-based Avison Young opened the Memphis office in December, marking its third location in Tennessee and its 50th nationally. 

4. Kilzer on a New Pulpit But Still Finding Sanctuary in Music -

“I died in Paris,” said John Kilzer, who spoke from the pulpit of Calvary Episcopal Church as part of the church’s annual Lenten Preaching Series.

The 50-something singer-songwriter and Methodist minister was telling the story of his spiritual death in November 1991 while on a European tour for Geffen Records and Peter Asher Management.

Scott Sharpe recently was named chief administrative officer of the Shelby County District Attorney General’s office following the departure of longtime CAO Priscilla Campbell.

8. Varying Health Premium Subsidies Worry Consumers -

MIAMI (AP) – Linda Close was grateful to learn she qualified for a sizable subsidy to help pay for her health insurance under the new federal law. But in the process of signing up for a plan, Close said her HealthCare.gov account showed several different subsidy amounts, varying as much as $180 per month.

9. County Primary Filing Deadline Arrives -

A couple of days before the filing deadline for candidates in the May county primaries, it looked like a political season with lots of action at the deadline itself.

The deadline is noon Thursday, Feb. 20, with another week for any candidates who meet that deadline to withdraw if they wish.

The Memphis Bar Association has appointed new officers and new members to the board of directors for 2010.

Ricky E. Wilkins of the Law Offices of Ricky E. Wilkins will serve as president. John Cannon of Shuttleworth Williams PLLC will serve as vice president and Gary K. Smith of Apperson Crump Maxwell PLC will serve as treasurer. Linda Warren Seely of Memphis Area Legal Services Inc. will serve as secretary.

20. Finch Appointed to Dean Position At UofM School of Nursing -

Dr. Linda Finch has been appointed associate dean and director of undergraduate programs for the Loewenberg School of Nursing at the University of Memphis. Finch was previously an associate professor on the nursing faculty. She has been named an American Nurses Foundation Scholar by the American Nurses Association and is an active member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the honor society for nursing. She also has served on the editorial board of “The Tennessee Nurse.”

21. MERI Names Roberts Human Resources Coordinator -

Nancy Roberts has joined the Medical Education & Research Institute (MERI) as human resources coordinator.

Roberts joins MERI after working as vice president of organization development for a large apartment real estate investment trust. In addition, Roberts has more than 15 years of HR experience, including serving in the human resources capacity for a large retail operation and a large marketing firm.

When more than 200 experts in medical imaging gather in Memphis starting today, they'll indulge their passion for peering deep inside of human bodies.

He attended Johnson & Wales University's College of Culinary Arts in Miami. He previously was a chef at the Ambassador Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and with Do & Co International Catering.

While many teenagers' biggest problems revolve around what plans they have on a Friday or what they're going to wear, some teens are dealing with much weightier issues.

35. St. Jude Researcher Earns National Recognition -

Scientific American named Dr. Robert G. Webster, the Rose Marie Thomas chair at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, as a research leader in the 2005 Scientific American 50 - a list compiled by the magazine that recognizes outstanding acts of leadership in science and technology from the past year.

36. Barnes Elected Chairman of FedEx/St. Jude Classic -

Reggie Barnes was elected general chairman of the FedEx St. Jude Classic and president of Youth Programs Inc., the governing body of the PGA Tour event. Barnes previously served as treasurer of Youth Programs. He also is the former chairman of the Memphis and Shelby County Sports Authority and the team selection committee for the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. Barnes is managing director of Morgan Keegan & Co. and also works with Athletic Resource Management.
