The Shelby County Democratic Party was disbanded by the Tennessee Democratic Party in August after two disastrous county election cycles for the Democratic slate and increasing dysfunction by the local party’s executive committee.

With early voting underway in advance of the Aug. 7 election day, the sample ballot does not include Juvenile Court clerk candidate Henri Brooks, Circuit Court clerk nominee Rhonda Banks, Probate Court clerk candidate William Chism and County Clerk nominee Charlotte Draper.

10. Harris Files Ford Challenge at Deadline -

Memphis City Council member Lee Harris is challenging Democratic state Sen. Ophelia Ford in the August primary for District 29, the Senate seat held by a member of the Ford family since 1975.

11. Early Voting Expands in District 91 Primary -

Early voting in the Democratic primary special election for State House District 91 expands Friday, Sept. 27, from the Shelby County Election Commission’s Downtown offices, 157 Poplar Ave., to three satellite locations.

12. Former Theater Site Heads to Auction Block -

The Internal Revenue Service is auctioning a Midtown building with an interesting history.

On Friday, Aug. 9, at the Shelby County Courthouse, the IRS will auction the building and a vacant lot at 319 Dr. M. L. King Jr. Drive and 323 Dr. M. L. King Jr. Drive. The minimum bid the IRS is seeking is $12,356. The IRS seized the building for nonpayment of IRS taxes due from Faith Village.

Memphis’ commercial real estate landscape may be inching closer to recovery, as evidenced by the latest CB Richard Ellis MarketView report.

In the second quarter of 2011, Memphis’ office market saw continued signs of growth from existing tenants, and improved investment sale activity.

Leadership Memphis has announced new board members and officers for its new fiscal year.

Bryan Ford, commercial and industrial client manager in Memphis for Regions Financial Corp., is the April recipient of Regions’ Better Life Award.
