Lots of news on a very rainy day including the flooding from the constant rain that closed some schools and cancelled a lot of other events. And then there was a mudslide on Riverside Drive from the bluff overlooking Tom Lee Park and the Mississippi River. The rain has also pushed the Wolf River to the point that it is now over some parts of the greenway in Germantown.

8. Overton Square Highlights Commercial Real Estate Positives -

The old owners of Overton Square had a plan to remove existing local tenants and retailers and replace them with national retailers.

They succeeded in emptying Overton Square of tenants, but couldn’t attract new national retailers, leaving what was left to twist in the wind.

Loeb Properties Inc. plans to build on the momentum it has created at Overton Square while turning its attention to other parts of Midtown.

After suffering through a prolonged slump, the Memphis commercial real estate market this year began to shake off the rust that gathered during the “Great Recession,” and brighter days could be ahead for the prime markets in the apartment, retail, office and industrial sectors, according to local experts.

The Memphis area multifamily and retail markets continue to chug along, with the newer, more upscale products in each sector propping up both overall markets.

15. East Memphis Retail Center Sees Positive Lease Activity -

The Shops at Chickasaw Gardens, on Polar Avenue near the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, has seen good leasing activity recently.

Shark’s Fish and Chicken, an Arkansas-based restaurant chain, signed a lease for 2,330 square feet at 3183 Poplar Ave., taking the former Back Yard Burgers space. David’s Frames & Art renewed its lease for 3,080 square feet at 3151 Poplar Ave. Create A Cig, an electronic cigarette shop, will open soon at 3175 Poplar Ave.

16. Bioventus Inks Deal for 40,000 Square Feet -

A Durham, N.C.-based biologics company is relocating its Memphis presence, signifying a boon to the Northeast office submarket.

Bioventus LLC has inked 38,880 square feet of office and manufacturing space in Goodlett Farms Business Campus, 1900 Charles Bryan Road, in Cordova.

17. MBIN Signs New Lease At Bellbrook Park -

A Memphis-based wholesaler of collectable items has signed a new industrial lease in the Southwest submarket.

MBIN Global Inc. has signed a new lease for 26,250 square feet at Bellbrook Industrial Park, 1004 Brooks Road.

20. $800K Permit Filed For Wally Joe Restaurant -

The ownership group that plans to bring a restaurant to 690 S. Perkins Road in the East Central/Poplar-Perkins area of East Memphis has filed an $800,000 permit application with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement to expand and renovate the property’s 2,764-square-foot house.

21. Diamond Int’l To Expand -

Change is coming to the northeast corner of East Brooks and Millbranch roads in Whitehaven, where Diamond International Trucks Inc. will double its size by taking over the former Chuck Hutton Toyota dealership.

22. Former Hutton Toyota Sells for $1.8M -

The former Chuck Hutton Toyota dealership at 1710 E. Brooks Road has sold for $1.8 million to Brooks Realty Partners, whose general partner, Richard “Dick” Sweebe, owns Mid-America International Trucks Inc. That company has a truck dealership at 1750 E. Brooks Road, next door to the Chuck Hutton property.

23. Ritz Laments Pressure on County Government -

Shelby County Board of Commissioners member Mike Ritz – a licensed real estate broker and former head of the Memphis and Shelby County planning office – was not happy.

Seated a few feet away from him was Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton Jr., who at the commission’s meeting last week had just laid out a few reasons he favors a temporary bonus for county employees. With one eye toward the sea of red ink that appears certain to drench the county’s balance sheet this year and next, commissioners chose instead to revisit the issue of bonuses in early 2009.

A foreclosure notice has been filed for the property at 574 N. Fourth St., which Las Vegas-based real estate investment company Blue Maple Investments LLC bought in March 2007 for $35,900.
