5. Opera Memphis Using Grant to Reach Mostly Absent Audience -

Innovation isn’t necessarily the first word that comes to mind to describe opera. That’s one reason Opera Memphis’ award of a $28,000 Innovation Grant – among the first to be handed out by OPERA America, funded by the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation – is interesting, to say the least.

At the end of last week’s day-long RegionSmart Summit Downtown, Tipton County Executive Jeff Huffman remarked on how roomy and comfortable the chairs at the Halloran Centre had been for the mayors, planners, developers and others who gathered for the Urban Land Institute event.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) – President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that his administration will re-examine federal requirements governing the fuel efficiency of cars and trucks, moving forcefully against Obama-era environmental regulations that Trump says are stifling economic growth.

A close one for the Tigers Sunday at the Forum but Houston still wins 72-71. One more home game Thursday against Tulane and a road game Saturday against SMU before March Madness begins. As that was happening here, better results in Denver Sunday where the Grizz beat the Nuggets 105-98.

9. Manning, Spurrier Enter College Football Hall of Fame -

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Peyton Manning and his Southeastern Conference nemesis, former Florida coach Steve Spurrier, will go into the College Football Hall of Fame together.

The rest of the new Hall of Fame class of 13 players and coaches announced Monday includes Southern California Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart, San Diego State running back Marshall Faulk and Danny Ford, who coached Clemson to its only national championship.

LEBANON, Tenn. (AP) — He's banned from City Hall by a court restraining order but that's not stopping a man from running for mayor of a Tennessee city.

The Tennessean reports ( http://tnne.ws/2dYWQKd ) 59-year-old Derek Dodson qualified to run for mayor of Lebanon, Tennessee. Though he hasn't actively campaigned so far, Dodson vowed to use his candidacy to speak out against incumbent Mayor Philip Craighead, who's seeking re-election.

Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife and first lady Rosalynn Carter arrived in the city Sunday for a week of work in North Memphis on the Habitat for Humanity subdivision Bearwater Park.

Peyton Manning and his old college football nemesis, Steve Spurrier, could enter the Hall of Fame at the same time.

Manning, who lost to Spurrier's Florida teams three times as starting quarterback for Tennessee, along with the retired Head Ball Coach are both making their first appearance on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot.

15. Second Annual Starlite Revue Coming to the Halloran Centre April 8 -

Beale Street Caravan is set to present the second annual Starlite Revue – a one-night-only gospel, blues and soul extravaganza – April 8 at The Orpheum’s Halloran Centre.

Returning headliner Rev. John Wilkins will be joined by touring gospel acts that include The Southern Sons, The Masonic Travelers and The Bell Singers. Bringing contemporary Memphis roots and blues to the lineup will be co-headliner Jimbo Mathus, along with Sons of Mudboy and The Holy Ghost Town Band.

16. College Football Notebook: For Once, Vols on Right Side of Comeback -

After three times blowing double-digit leads this season, the University of Tennessee Volunteers rallied from a 21-point deficit to upset Georgia 38-31 on Saturday, Oct. 9.

It was a history-making day for quarterback Joshua Dobbs, who threw for 312 yards and rushed for 118 yards, marking the second time in Tennessee history a player had more than 300 yards passing and more than 100 yards rushing. (Dobbs did it for the first time in program history against South Carolina in 2014.) Dobbs also accounted for five touchdowns: three passing and two rushing.

Memphis City Council members closed out a series of votes Tuesday, Aug. 18, on moving the statue and disinterring the remains of Nathan Bedford Forrest from Health Sciences Park near Downtown Memphis.

Ever since Bon Ton Café reopened Downtown, the eatery has been rolling out incremental improvements.

It’s been a steady flow of additions, because the restaurant keeps working to accommodate requests and suggestions from customers. “You have asked, and we have delivered,” the restaurant wrote in recent days on its Facebook page about the updates.

Shelby County officials have reservations about plans to create a tax increment financing zone for the city’s proposed Heritage Trails development area.

The reservations prompted county finance experts to move a recommendation against the proposed tax increment financing district to a private committee meeting last month.
