Exhibit shows intimate moments in lives of jazz greats

David Berger fell in love with jazz as a teenager growing up in Queens in the 1950s. At age 14, he started playing the bass violin, the stringed instrument that's held upright, played with a distinctive slap and central to scores of jazz recordings.

The Memphis office of the American Cancer Society (ACS) hosts its 30th annual Great American Smokeout today at 11 a.m. at 1378 Union Ave. The event, which was created to encourage people to stop smoking, also will be the kickoff of a grassroots campaign to support a statewide smoke-free law in Tennessee.
