2013: The Memphis Grizzlies announced they would not renew the contract of Lionel Hollins as coach of the NBA team following the Grizzlies’ best year in franchise history. Some Grizzlies fans rallied in Tom Lee Park in support of a new contract for Hollins.
1977: Former president Gerald Ford, playing in the pro-am event of the Danny Thomas Golf Classic at Colonial Country Club, hit a hole-in-one on the fifth hole with a five-iron shot that hit the green six feet from the flag and rolled in. On the ninth hole, Ford hit three straight bunker shots.

1969: Alabama Gov. George Wallace in Memphis for the first in a series of political fundraisers, his first public appearance since the 1968 presidential contest and the death of his wife, Lurleen. Wallace raised more than $100,000 and drew a crowd of 13,000.
1944: Headlines in the June 4 edition of The Daily News were an indication that Memphians were looking ahead to the end of World War II. “Postwar Homes Will Be Much Like Present Ones,” read one headline at the top of the front page. “World War II Has Cost One Trillion Dollars,” read another. Further down the page were stories with the headlines, “Three-Dimension Movies Shown In Near Future” and “Many Soldiers Won’t Want Old Jobs Back.” Two days later Allied forces crossed the English Channel to France in the D-Day invasion.
