Business Licenses Up 26 Percent in Second Quarter

The last three months proved to be a healthy period for the local business climate.
Business licenses issued by the Shelby County Clerk’s Office in the second quarter of 2014 spiked 25.7 percent from the same period in 2013, according to The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com.
The second quarter had 1,622 licenses issued, compared with 1,290 from April to June in 2013. Year to date, there were 3,311 licenses issued, compared with 2,705 through the first six months of 2013.
The strong quarter for business activity bolstered the total for 2014 as well. Year to date, business licenses issued improved 22.4 percent from the first six months of 2013.
Phil Trenary, president and CEO of Greater Memphis Chamber, was pleased to see an improving business climate in Memphis and Shelby County.
“It’s essential that we continue to create and foster an environment that helps our businesses, especially our small businesses, succeed,” he said.
Year to date, March has been the busiest month, with 593 licenses originating in Tennessee issued through the Shelby County Clerk’s Office In the second quarter, April was the busiest month with 529 licenses issued. The licenses include both new and renewals.
By ZIP code, the second-quarter leaders were Whitehaven’s 38116, with 86 licenses issued. Oakhaven/Parkway Village’s 38118 was next, with 83 licenses; Hickory Hill’s 38115 had 82; Southeast Shelby County’s 38125 had 81; and Raleigh’s 38128 had 72.
In the second quarter of 2013, Hickory Hill’s 38115 led all ZIP codes with 72 licenses issued; Oakhaven/Parkway Village had 68; Bartlett’s 38134 had 63; Southeast Shelby County’s 38125 had 60. Three other ZIP codes had 52 licenses issued: Westwood’s 38109, University’s 38111 and Raleigh’s 38128.
By ZIP code for 2014, the leading areas for business licenses are Oakhaven/Parkway Village’s 38118, with 171 licenses issued; Hickory Hill’s 38115, with 170; and Southeast Shelby County’s 38125, with 164.
By ZIP code year to date for 2013, the leaders were Hickory Hill’s 38115 with 165 licenses issued; Southeast Shelby County’s 38125 with 144; and Oakhaven/Parkway Village’s 38118 with 138.
Second-quarter corporate charters totaled 406, down 3.6 percent from the 421 in the same period in 2013. The charters include corporations and limited liability corporations.
Year to date, 914 corporate charters were issued in 2014 – down 3.1 percent from the 943 issued through the first six months of 2013.
Trenary also noted that CNNMoney recently listed Memphis as a top city in which to start a business, calling it a “testament to the entrepreneurial foundation that is still thriving in our community.”
