Odds are, most people have not considered eating food as a spiritual and theological act. But that is exactly how Noah Campbell views it.
Campbell is founder of the Memphis Center for Food and Faith. And on Saturday, Feb. 1, the center will host a talk by Fred Bahnson, director of the Food, Faith & Religious Leadership Initiative at Wake Forest School of Divinity.
The event, which begins at 7 p.m., is free and open to the public. It will be held at Crosstown Arts, 430 N. Cleveland St. Contact Sara Studdard at firstname.lastname@example.org to register. Light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
“It’s really more of a book signing and book reading than a straight lecture,” Campbell said. “Fred’s going to facilitate some discussion of the connection between food and faith.”
Bahnson is the author of “Soil & Sacrament: A Spiritual Memoir of Food and Faith” and co-author of “Making Peace With the Land.” He holds a master’s degree in theological studies from Duke University.
Campbell says Bahnson will be talking about the “disconnect” that exists between faith and food. The Memphis Center for Food and Faith promotes education and action to “help congregations better connect their food practices to ministries of creation care and community renewal.”

“Our faith calls us to attend to all of the contexts of food,” Campbell said. “From how land is cared for to how animals are cared for … all the way down to issues of food access and wholesome foods that are not just about consumption and calories, to food creating a bond socially at the table.”
