Bowling for Who-Knows-What

On the day after Christmas, 1958, I turned 7. The next day, Ole Miss played Florida in the Gator Bowl. The only other bowl games then were Sugar, Orange, Rose, and Cotton – all played on New Year’s Day – plus Sun, Tangerine, and Bluegrass, played earlier. Eight in all.

The Bluegrass Bowl was played only once, in Louisville, Ky. (With a name like that, where else?) On game day (Dec. 23), tickets originally priced at $15 were going for a buck and a half.

The current bowl season is underway. Belatedly, as a public service, here are this season’s offerings:

Dec. 21:
Gildan New Mexico Bowl – Wash. St. v. Col. St. – Albuquerque
Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl – Fresno St. v. USC – Las Vegas
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl – Buffalo v. San Diego St. – Boise
R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl – Tulane v. La.-Lafayette – New Orleans

Dec. 23:
Beef ‘O’ Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl – E. Carolina v. Ohio U. – St. Petersburg

Dec. 24:
Sheraton Hawaii Bowl – Boise St. v. Oreg. St. – Honolulu

Dec. 27:

Fight Hunger Bowl – BYU v. Wash. – San Francisco

Dec. 28:

Belk Bowl – Cincinnati v. UNC – Charlotte
Russell Athletic Bowl – Miami v. Louisville – Orlando
Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl – Michigan v. Kan. St. – Tempe

Dec. 30:
Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl – Middle Tenn. v. Navy – Ft. Worth
Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl – Ole Miss v. Ga. Tech – Nashville
Valero Alamo Bowl – Oregon v. Texas – San Antonio
National University Holiday Bowl – Ariz. St. v. Texas Tech – San Diego

Dec. 31:

Hyundai Sun Bowl – Va. Tech v. UCLA – El Paso
AutoZone Liberty Bowl – Rice v. Miss. St. – Memphis
Chick-fil-A Bowl – Duke v. Texas A&M – Atlanta

Jan. 1:
TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl – Nebraska v. Georgia – Jacksonville
Heart of Dallas Bowl – UNLV v. N. Texas – Dallas
Capital One Bowl – Wisconsin v. S. Carolina – Orlando
Outback Bowl – Iowa v. LSU – Tampa
Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO – Stanford v. Mich. St. – Pasadena
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl – UCF v. Baylor – Glendale

Jan. 2:
Allstate Sugar Bowl – Oklahoma v. Alabama – New Orleans

Jan. 3:
Discover Orange Bowl – Clemson v. Ohio State – Miami
AT&T Cotton Bowl – Oklahoma St. v. Missouri – Arlington

Jan. 4:
BBVA Compass Bowl – Vanderbilt v. Houston – Birmingham

Jan. 5:
GoDaddy Bowl – Arkansas St. v. Ball St. – Mobile

Jan. 6:
VIZIO BCS National Championship – Fla. St. v. Auburn – Pasadena

Thirty-five in all. Get it? Wait a sec, it’s not a joke, is it?

For kickoff times, names of arenas, and states in which host cities are located, Google it. Ditto for ticket prices. A recent article noted the “average price” of a ticket for the BCS Championship Game is $1,833. But for $12-15, you could get in to the Texas, Independent or GoDaddy.

Happy bowling!
