While candidates are watching the election calendar, the committee that will award the Dunavant Public Servant Awards is also watching the calendar.

There are two weeks left for citizens to nominate an elected official and/or an appointed public official for the awards named in honor of the late Probate Court Clerk Bobby Dunavant.

The awards, in their 11th year, go to one elected official and one non-elected official annually who are a model of good public service and principles of public service.

The 2013 award recipients were Memphis City Council member Jim Strickland and Shelby County Jury Commissioner Clyde “Kit” Carson.

Citizens can nominate someone for the awards through March 14 on a form on the website of the Rotary Club of Memphis East, www.rotaryclubofmemphiseast.org. The award recipients are selected by a committee of Rotarians and the Dunavant family.

The awards are sponsored by The Daily News and the University of Memphis and will be given April 21 at a luncheon at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn featuring a keynote speech by former Tennessee governor and current U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander.

The University of Memphis will also host the Dunavant Public Service Symposium that same day that explores and discusses the attributes of public service with a discussion about the day-to-day questions and dilemmas that confront those elected and those appointed.

Details of the symposium, now in its second year, are forthcoming.

The awards committee is encouraging past winners to attend as well as make nominations and get others in government service involved in the awards and the discussions the awards are designed to generate.
