The annual Methodist Cancer Center Luncheon has a track record of bringing in speakers with high name recognition, from actor Michael Douglas to former first lady Laura Bush to network anchorman Tom Brokaw to actress Sally Field.

LOWE

Or as Methodist Healthcare Foundation director of development Bob Plunk puts it, “When we promote the name, or tell somebody the name, we like to get an ‘ooh’ and an ‘ah.’ That has occurred this year with Rob Lowe. Especially with females.”

Lowe, 50, will be the guest speaker at the 13th Cancer Center Luncheon on Nov. 21, at 11:45 a.m., at The Peabody hotel. Proceeds from the event will benefit the West Cancer Center, which is a joint affiliate with the University of Tennessee and Methodist Healthcare Family.

Each of the previous 12 luncheons raised more than $100,000, Plunk said

Lowe is known for both his work in feature films, including “St. Elmo’s Fire,” “About Last Night” and “The Outsiders,” as well as his roles on television. Perhaps his most popular role was that of Sam Seaborn on the hit drama “West Wing.”

Lowe, who received an Emmy nomination for his portrayal on “West Wing” and twice won a Screen Actors Guild award, recently played Chris Traeger on “Parks and Recreation.”

Although Lowe will take questions from the audience and discuss his acting career as part of his appearance, he does have a personal and multi-layered story about cancer to share with the audience. Lowe’s mother, grandmother and great-grandmother all died from breast cancer. His father is a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor.

“The first part of his presentation will be about that, to encourage the survivors in the audience,” Plunk said. “For the most part, everybody’s family has been touched by cancer.”

Tickets and sponsorships for the event are available. Ticket prices start at $125 per person or $1,250 for a table of 10. Preferred seating, including a VIP reception, is $250 per person and $2,500 for a table of 10. Prime seating is $500 per person, $5,000 for a table of 10, and includes the VIP reception and a photo with Lowe.
