First-Quarter Business Licenses Up 21.8 Percent

The number of business licenses issued by the Shelby County Clerk’s Office in the first quarter of 2014 was 21.8 percent higher than the same period in 2013.
From January through March of 2014, there were 1,630 business licenses issued, as compared to 1,338 for that time frame in 2013.
March was the busiest month, with 593 licenses issued, according to The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com. February had 546 and January 491. In 2013, February, with 475 licenses issued, was the busiest month in the first quarter. The licenses include both new and renewals.
“With the national and local economy on the rise, we are starting to see the number of business licenses issued increase,” said Dexter Muller, interim president of the Greater Memphis Chamber. “Small business is the backbone of our economy.”
By ZIP code, the first-quarter leaders were Hickory Hill’s 38115 and Oakhaven/Parkway Village’s 38118, each with 88 licenses issued. Southeast Shelby County’s 38125 and Raleigh’s 38128 each had 83 licenses issued. Bartlett’s 38134 ranked fifth with 80.
For the first quarter of 2013, Hickory Hill’s 38115 led with 93 licenses issued. Southeast Shelby County’s 38125 had 84, Cordova North’s 38016 had 75, and Frayser’s 38127 and Raleigh’s 38128 each had 56.
First-quarter corporate charters issued in 2014 totaled 508, down 2.7 percent from 522 in the same period of 2013. The charters include corporations and limited liability corporations.
Among the first-quarter LLCs: Memphis Redbirds LLC, with an address of 700 Clark St. in St. Louis. The St. Louis Cardinals purchased their Triple-A baseball team this year while the city acquired AutoZone Park, which the city leases back to the Cardinals.
