Aghabeg Joins Gateway Group as Controller

Angela Aghabeg has joined temporary staffing and executive search firm Gateway Group Personnel as controller. In her new role, Aghabeg is responsible for the maintenance and accuracy of the general ledger and compliance with governmental reporting requirements and tax filings. She also is accountable for compiling historical and current data and financial records and preparing monthly financial statements for analysis and projections.

Hometown: San Antonio, Texas, and Alhambra, Calif.

Experience: Economics degree from University of California, Irvine; accounting degree from California State University at Fullerton; audits and taxes at Vicenti, Lloyd & Stutzman in Glendora, Calif.; CPA license since 1996; corporate accounting at International Paper in Memphis; part-time accounting at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Memphis

Family: Husband, Darren; children Alyssa (10 years old) and Ryan (14 years old)

What talent do you wish you had? Playing the piano

Who has had the greatest influence on you and why? My father has had the greatest influence in my life because he was an excellent example of someone who worked hard, respected others, and loved and supported his family.

What attracted you to Gateway Group Personnel? Gateway Group Personnel is composed of competent job recruiters who successfully place candidates in companies; thus, contributing to the improvement in the lives of people and the economy.

What are your goals in your new role? My goal as the controller is to accurately measure the company’s financial progress and to help it remain in compliance with an increasingly complex regulatory environment.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment? My greatest accomplishment was completing a half marathon in 2013.

What do you most enjoy about your work? What I enjoy most about my job is working with people who work as hard as I do to enhance the success of the company.

If you could give one piece of advice to young people, what would it be? My one piece of advice to young people is to always be accountable for your actions.

Jason L. Landrum has been appointed chief information officer of Sedgwick Claims Management Services Inc. Landrum joined Sedgwick in 2010 as vice president of information technology applications and was promoted to senior vice president in 2012.

Harry L. Goldsmith has joined Bass, Berry & Sims PLC as senior counsel in the Memphis office. Goldsmith retired as executive vice president, general counsel and secretary of AutoZone Inc. in January, having served as general counsel for 20 years.

RAGLAND

Stephen W. Ragland has been elected a member of the American Bar Foundation. Ragland is a member of the Memphis office of Bass, Berry & Sims PLC and co-chair of its Financial Services/Bankruptcy practice group. He also chairs the firm’s lateral hiring committee.

Katie Midgley has been promoted to director of research and evaluation at the Plough Foundation. Midgley joined the Plough Foundation three years ago and previously served as program associate, providing leadership for the foundation’s initiative on aging, coinciding speakers’ series and newly released request for proposals.

Matt Brinner, Laurie M. Thornton and Ross E. Webster have been promoted to members of Glankler Brown PLLC. Brinner concentrates his practice in corporate and business transactions, real estate and secured lending, and commercial property tax appeals. Thornton’s concentration includes residential and commercial real estate. Webster has a wide practice range, focusing most of his time on defending clients in business litigation.
