It looks as if the prospective candidates in many of the suburban school board races on the Nov. 7 ballot had already decided the winners a day away from the noon, Thursday, Sept. 26, filing deadline for the six sets of races.
Based on those candidates who had filed petitions with the Shelby County Election Commission by noon Wednesday, four of the five school board seats on the Bartlett school board and all of the Collierville school board races were one-candidate races. Four of the five school board races in Arlington were also uncontested races. Three of the five races in Germantown were uncontested as well. And each of the seven seats on the Millington school board had just one contender.
Lakeland’s school board election is a different matter because a voter there chooses from a single list of candidates and votes for five on the list. As of Wednesday, six candidates had filed for the Lakeland ballot.
Some of the uncontested races could and probably will change by Thursday’s filing deadline and those who file their qualifying petitions by noon have another week to withdraw if they wish. The Election Commission then certifies the fields for the ballots.
While seven candidates have filed in Millington for the seven positions, 22 petitions are out in that set of races. Some of the petitions are multiple petitions checked out by a single candidate looking at several races.
The school board positions in each of the six sets of races are not district seats representing certain areas of the town or city. They are all at-large seats.
Here are the candidates who had filed qualifying petitions by Wednesday at noon.
In Arlington, Danny D. Young filed for Position 1, Dexter Orman and Barbara Fletcher for Position 2, Kevin Yates in Position 3, Kay Morgan Williams for Position 4, and Dale A. Viox for Position 5.
In Bartlett, Jeff Norris is in the race for Position 1, Erin E. Berry and Alison Shores for Position 2, Shirley K. Jackson for Position 3, Donald B. Woodruff for Position 4, and David M. Cook for Position 5.
The Collierville contenders who have filed are Kevin Vaughan for Position 1, Wanda Chism for Position 2, Mark Hansen for Position 3, Catherine W. Messerly for Position 4, and Wright Cox for Position 5.
In Germantown, Edgar Babian has filed for Position 1, Linda M. Fisher and Mark Dely in Position 2, Natalie Williams for Position 3, Lisa L. Parker and Charles Dibella for Position 4, and Ken Hoover for Position 5.
The Lakeland slate is John K. Floyd, James Andrew Griffith, Kelley E. Hale, Laura M. Harrison, Teresa L. Henry and Noel M. Wright.
The Millington races so far are Gregory Ritter running for Position 1; Cecilia Haley for Position 2, although two petitions are out; Charles Hurt for Position 3; Cody Childress for Position 4; Mary L. Kennon for Position 5; Thomas D. Stephens for Position 6; and Donald K. Holsinger for Position 7.
