Synk to Lead Business Growth Workshop
By Andy Meek
One often-heard quote about the importance of strategizing makes the point that someone who fails to plan is essentially planning to fail.
At a one-day workshop next month, author, business coach and strategy expert Michael Synk will present a version of that concept tailored to helping businesspeople address a fundamental goal: how to foster growth in their companies.
The “Mastering the Rockefeller Habits” workshop he’s leading Nov. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., sponsored in part by The Daily News, will help business leaders figure out how to take their companies to the next level.
Synk says he often runs into companies and business leaders who spend a large amount of money and time thinking non-specific thoughts about the future – or, at least, thoughts they’re not translating into action now. Also, they may identify needs like making more sales calls or boosting sales, but they’re not addressing those game-changing moves that can tilt the entire direction of a company.
That gets at the growth strategy Synk will work with his audience at the workshop to craft.
“You’ve got to write a plan anyway,” Synk said. “You can do this all by yourself, or, even better, you can do it on this day and have support and ideas and structure for what you’re doing. That’s a big benefit of the workshop. You don’t need to look for a venue, just come to this one. It’s about spending one day and walking out with a plan. And you may already have a plan, but we can refresh it – fit it into a format that helps your team execute better.”
This workshop will be held in the Fogelman Executive Center at the University of Memphis, and it will be the antithesis of the kind of event that produces a thick binder an attendee is likely to take home and leave untouched on a shelf or in a drawer.
At the “Mastering the Rockefeller Habits” workshop, attendees will learn about ingredients for growth in 2014 including how to draft key elements of a strategy so that they’re poised for top-line growth; how to build or review a brand promise and tune it for success; how to find cash in a company; how to determine if they have the right people in the right seats at their company; and several other important goals.
Sponsors include The Daily News, First Alliance Bank and Decosimo Certified Public Accountants.
Synk has spent the last decade as a business educator, coach and consultant. He also is certified by Gazelles International to teach a strategic planning model popularized by the book “Mastering the Rockefeller Habits” and offered through Gazelles International. It refers to the key decisions that leadership teams have to get right in order to grow.
“I was talking to someone today, and one of the things they said is one of the benefits of going to this workshop is it’s an insurance policy that you’ll get growth next year,” Synk said. “He said, ‘We’ve got to do something better.’ Well, you’ve got to get it down in a simple format that you can work towards.”
Participants will get a copy of the book “Mastering the Rockefeller Habits,” by Verne Harnish, as well as printed workshop tools and worksheets and a two-hour follow-up coaching session. Greater Memphis Chamber members will have the opportunity to get special pricing, and alumni attendees get a free seat if they bring three additional team members with them.
