The Hunt-Phelan house would become a campus for the Sickle Cell Foundation of Tennessee under a plan the foundation announced Tuesday, Oct. 29, on the steps of the 175-year-old home at 533 Beale St.

The foundation has set a goal of raising $2 million from private donors to buy the 6.5 acres at Beale and Lauderdale streets that includes the last mansion on Beale. The entire property is currently known as The Inn at Hunt-Phelan.

The Hunt-Phelan house itself would continue to operate as it is today, a public space for events, but the money made from that would go toward the foundation and its work.

The more recent brick building by the historic home would be a temporary home for sickle cell patients and their families, similar to the homes operated by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

The foundation’s chief executive officer, Trevor Thompson, said the foundation has plans for research labs and similar facilities on the property in new low-rise buildings. That would include a primary care medical clinic as well as a goal of having the largest sickle cell trait-testing program in the three-state region.

Thompson cofounded the organization in 2008, and it has an office at 6000 Poplar Ave. as well as offices in Nashville and Chattanooga.
