1993: Construction on the $9.1 million Wonders cultural series exhibit on Napoleon was under way at the Memphis Cook Convention Center, opening to the public in April. The construction was on the settings for 175 objects from the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte.

1974: Elvis Presley ended another tour with a show at the Mid-South Coliseum. The last show of the tour was recorded for a live album that was released later and included Presley telling the audience that they were proof you can come home again.

1973: A $542,000, 75,000-square-foot building on the northeast corner of Perkins and Cromwell was being built for Merle Norman Cosmetics. The regional headquarters was to be completed by October.

1963: On the front page of The Daily News, retail sales for 1962 in Shelby County grew by 8 percent compared to 1961. The University of Tennessee Bureau of Business Research statistics were based on sales tax receipts. Shelby County posted sales of $795,201 for the year.

1942: Memphis Juvenile Court Judge Camille Kelley was the featured speaker at the Exchange Club St. Patrick’s Day luncheon. “Although many great events in American history have occurred on St. Patrick’s Day, the news of the landing of General Douglas McArthur in Australia is the greatest of them all,” Kelley told those at The Gayoso.

The Glenview Coal Co. was advertising Goose Egg coal in The Daily News for $6.75 per ton cash.
