2012: Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell was among those reacting to a legal motion by the Shelby County Commission to stop the move by suburban leaders to form their own municipal school districts. Luttrell said he wasn’t surprised by the motion but was “shocked” by the commission’s claim that the suburban school districts would amount to a racial resegregation of public schools in Shelby County.

2008: Chamberlain & McCreery Inc. landed a $12 million contract to build 73 new homes at the Naval Support Activity base in Millington.

1993: On the front page of The Daily News, Trinity Lakes Apartments at Germantown Parkway and Macon Road sold by TFA Properties Inc. to Trinity Lakes Apartments Limited Partnership, of Arkansas, for $7.8 million.

1956: Elvis Presley performed at Russwood Park as the headliner in a benefit show for the Cynthia Milk Fund. Days earlier he had appeared on the Steve Allen variety television show and followed that with an RCA recording session where he recorded “Hound Dog,” a tune he and his band had been performing for some time and which he performed on the Steve Allen Show. Presley drew a crowd of 7,000 to the daylong show at Russwood Park, which was twice the crowd that showed up the same day for a segregationist rally at the Overton Park Shell featuring then U.S. Senator from Mississippi James Eastland.
