This week in Memphis history: June 21-27

2008: On the cover of The Memphis News, a story on the pasts of and connections between City Council member Rickey Peete and former Shelby County Commissioner Joe Cooper that ended with Peete pleading guilty to federal corruption charges and Cooper wearing a wire and recording conversations in which he paid Peete for his council vote on a billboard project. The story quoted from prosecution documents outlining the crime. “During this conversation, Peete said, ‘I’m going to do what’s right for the community. ... It looks OK to me,’ and then Peete showed Cooper a note written on a piece of paper. The note instructed Cooper to place the ‘paperwork’ (money) in the bathroom.”

1993: Memphis premiere at The Orpheum of the movie “The Firm” with director Sydney Pollack in attendance. Filmed in Memphis, the movie adaptation of the John Grisham novel of the same name starred Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman and Jeanne Tripplehorn.

1973: James M. Tharpe took the oath as Circuit Court Judge Division 3. Tharpe was appointed by Gov. Winfield Dunn.

1972: Three Dog Night headlined the first of several years of summer rock concerts at the Liberty Bowl. Also on the bill were Black Oak Arkansas and Buddy Miles.

1955: The trade name Goldcrest 51 was sold to James Martin for $1,000 plus a royalty of two cents per case up to an annual cap of $4,000.
