Batch Memphis Launches Gift Service

The three Nashville friends who started Batch Nashville, which delivers a surprise batch of local goods each month to subscribers’ doorsteps, are bringing the service to Memphis.

Nashville entrepreneur Sam Davidson said the group behind Batch Nashville had been looking to bring the model to another city in the state and looked for one “that had a growing sense of local pride, as well as a national brand.”

Memphis, in their eyes, fit the bill and is where they’re soon launching Batch Memphis, with the first gift boxes shipping here the week of Jan. 20.

“After researching local products and potential alliances with corporate entities, Batch is excited to begin shipping in Memphis in January,” Davidson said.

The way the service works: Subscribers get a box with four products local to Memphis shipped to them each month. The fee is $90 for three months or $40 for a single month, and while each month’s contents will be a surprise, they’ll be grouped around a common theme.

Batch Nashville describes itself as seeking “fine ingredients, fine confections, fine purveyors and fine goods” for batches in its gift boxes. Memphis subscribers can sign up now at BatchMemphis.com for the first January delivery. January’s theme will be “Good Morning, Memphis,” followed by “Sugar & Spice” in February and “Something to Savor” in March.

“Last year, (I) wanted to send a gift box of locally made – in Nashville – items to friends in Colorado but had difficulty finding a curated box,” Davidson said.

He ended up driving around Nashville and put his own box together. A few months later, he shared details of the experience with his friend and Memphis native Rob Williams, a designer and photographer, and Stephen Moseley, and they began to talk about setting up a dedicated service to do the same thing.

“Looking at the financial success and popularity of other subscription box models, the group put it all together to launch Batch in Nashville back in August,” Davidson said.

Batch is Davidson’s fourth company. His first, Cool People Care, was co-founded with Moseley and sells T-shirts that raise money and awareness for a variety of nonprofit causes. Williams oversees Batch’s branding and designs, and Moseley is Batch’s chief operating officer.

As an example of the kinds of products Memphis subscribers might expect to get, Batch Nashville in December offered the “Rise and Shine Gift Batch,” which included a blend of whole bean coffee from Garage Coffee Co., a Nashville business that sells coffee, baked goods and sandwiches.

The batch also included some Sunday Morning Pancake Mix from My Friend Who Loves to Cook, which sells that pancake mix at several shops in Nashville, and the batch was rounded out by a sampling of local honey from TruBee, a venture from beekeepers specializing in raw, unfiltered honey, as well as a double serving of Cinnamon Girl oatmeal from Haulin’ Oats, a gourmet organic oatmeal company in Nashville.

Other gift batches in Nashville have included the “Bath + Body Gift Batch,” with products like locally made hand lotion and soap, as well as beeswax lip balm and beeswax rub from TruBee.

Batch Memphis founders say each batch will include details about the box’s contents so subscribers will know who made the goods and where to find out more. And the batches will include products that retail for as much as or more than the cost of a Batch Memphis subscription.
