April 26-May 2: This Week in Memphis History

1993: On the front page of The Daily News is a story looking at the formal opening on the Main Street Trolley, a project eight years in the making that remade what had been the Mid-America Mall. The Memphis Area Transit Authority offered free trolley rides the first two days of operation.

1973: Corey Mesler, a Bartlett High School senior, won the Mid-South Title Co. “Believe in Memphis” scholarship. “Memphis is the smile of human kindness you receive from passersby. Memphis is the helping hand when you’re down,” wrote Mesler, who is now co-owner of Burke’s Book Store in Cooper-Young and the author of several books.

1963: Attorney Harry W. Wellford Jr. was named as recipient of the Sam A. Myar Jr. Memorial Award by the Memphis and Shelby County Bar Association, an award that is still presented annually to a young attorney. Wellford became a Memphis Federal Court Judge.

1961: Opening day of the Chisca Plaza Motor Lodge addition to the Chisca hotel. Plans for the redevelopment of the Chisca as an apartment building include keeping the annex.

1942: The fourth selective service registration for the draft in Shelby County was held at 50 locations across the county conducted by a dozen draft boards just five months after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entry into World War II. Local draft officials said they expected a 50 percent increase in draft registration from the Feb. 18 session.
