1.285 Million in Mississippi Voted for President in 2012

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A new report finds more than 1.285 million Mississippians voted for president in 2012, one of the largest turnouts ever in the state.

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann says in a news release that the figure was second only to voter participation in the 2008 general election, in which 1.289 million votes were cast.

The secretary of state's office is required to issue a report to legislators, the governor and the public on each election.

Overall, Hosemann's report says the state's 82 counties were well-prepared despite a high number of last-minute voter registrations. The report outlines several problems, including inappropriate voter assistance, campaigning too close to the polls, a failure by some counties to certify results in a timely manner and lack of proper signs in some cases.
