More than 500 fans lined up against the famous brown brick façade of Sun Studio, 706 Union Ave. Monday, May 14, to meet singer-songwriter Lisa Marie Presley, who made her historic first public appearance at the legendary recording studio that launched the career of her father, music icon Elvis Presley.

PRESLEY

“Yesterday was the first time I really ever had the chance to get down here, and when I walked in it was pretty overwhelming and inspiring,” Lisa Marie Presley told The Daily News. “But more than anything, I just feel like Memphis needs to get some love going again. Nashville always gets the glory, so I’m thinking, ‘Let’s shine the light back over here.’ … You need to still come here and record and know that you can and be inspired. Incredible music came from here. It all started here, so it does mean a lot to me to be here.”

While Presley chatted with local media prior to the meet-and-greet, fans from as far away as Germany, England and Australia eagerly peered through the windows of Sun Studio – known as the Birthplace of Rock n’ Roll – with cameras and smartphones in hand, hoping to catch a glimpse of the woman known as the Princess of Rock n’ Roll.

The event at Sun Studio was the hometown leg of Presley’s promotional tour for her new album, “Storm & Grace,” which she describes as “more organic, rootsy and bluesy.”

“It’s much more stripped down naked than the previous two (albums), which were very over-produced, at my request and my encouragement, just because it was easy to hide behind that,” Presley said of the album, for which she wrote every song. “This one’s a lot more up-front and organic. It’s definitely from a more vulnerable, naked place than the previous two.”

A pair of devoted Elvis fans from Melbourne, Australia, who were staying at the Heartbreak Hotel and had spent the day at Graceland – said their Memphis trip became even more memorable when the unexpected opportunity to meet Lisa Marie Presley arose.

But many Bluff City residents were among the fans eager to meet Presley, who said of her hometown, “Memphis just always makes me really happy. It’s always been my favorite place, and the happiest I ever was as a kid. It’s always great for me to be here.”
