Methodist Healthcare ranked No. 1 in the Memphis metropolitan area and No. 3 in the state of Tennessee in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals 2012-2013.

The system’s four Memphis area adult hospitals, which are licensed as one, are Methodist University Hospital, Methodist North, Methodist South and Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown.

Methodist was cited as high-performing in 12 medical specialties, more than any other hospital in Tennessee. Those specialties were cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes/endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology; geriatrics; gynecology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; pulmonology; and urology.

Only 148 hospitals were nationally ranked in one or more specialties. To be included in the metro area report, a hospital had to score in the top 25 percent among its peers in at least one medical specialty.

Specialty rankings are based on reputation, services and volumes, safety and clinical outcomes.

“We are honored that once again the outstanding care Methodist provides to our patients is being recognized on this prestigious list,” Gary S. Shorb, president and CEO of Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare said in a statement.

Methodist Healthcare ranked No. 1 in the Memphis metropolitan area and No. 3 in Tennessee in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals 2012-2013.

Earlier this year, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, part of Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, ranked nationally in five specialties in U.S. News & World Report’s 2012-2013 Best Children’s Hospitals. Those specialties were neurology/neurosurgery; orthopedics; pulmonology; nephrology; and cardiology/heart surgery.

In the same report, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was ranked No. 6 nationally in pediatric cancer treatment.

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis, the flagship hospital of the Baptist Memorial Health Care Corp. system, ranked No. 2 in the Memphis metro area and No. 8 in the state.

Baptist was cited as high-performing in two specialties, cancer and cardiology/heart surgery.

“We are delighted that U.S. News and World Report recognizes the positive outcomes at Baptist Memphis,” Derick Ziegler, Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis administrator and CEO, said in a statement. “This award, like many of our quality recognitions from national organizations like Consumer Choice, Consumer Reports and HealthGrades, validate the high standards to which we hold ourselves to provide the best patient and family-centered care possible to all patients we serve.”

Covering 94 metro areas across the country, the U.S. News & World Report regional hospital rankings complement the national rankings by including hospitals that perform almost as well as nationally ranked institutions.
