Tdap Vaccination Required for Miss. 7th Graders

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The Mississippi State Department of Health will require the Tdap vaccination for all students entering 7th grade beginning with the 2012-13 school year.

The Tdap vaccine – tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis – had previously been a recommended vaccination for the age group since 2006. Forty-one other states have already implemented this particular vaccination requirement.

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, has increased in frequency across the country in recent years, as protection from the childhood pertussis vaccine has become weaker over time in the adolescent population.

State Health Officer Dr. Mary Currier says Tdap is recommended for all adolescents but will only be required for those entering the seventh grade.
