NASHVILLE (AP) – The Tennessee Department of Human Services is accepting applications from local agencies who want to distribute food to needy children over the summer.

The Summer Food Service Program helps provide nutrition for children who might otherwise not have enough food or nourishing food during the summer school break.

DHS contracts with several local nonprofit sponsors to prepare, deliver and serve free meals and snacks to children in low-income areas of Tennessee.

Last year, 58 sponsoring groups served more than 2.6 million meals. The distribution sites included camps, parks, playgrounds and recreation centers and numbered 1,500 statewide. The application form can be found online.
