Tenn. Democrats Say GOP Slacking on Job Creation

NASHVILLE (AP) – Tennessee Democrats say the new Republican majority and administration are focusing on other issues instead of a job creation plan they promised voters.

Democratic leaders from both the Senate and the House held a press conference on Thursday and noted that it was the 40th day of the new administration and a plan to create jobs hasn't been revealed.

Tennessee's most recent unemployment figure is 9.4 percent.

Democrats said Republicans are instead focusing on everything but jobs. They displayed a tall stack of Republican bills unrelated to jobs next to just a few pages of GOP jobs legislation.

Republican Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey of Blountville later told reporters that government doesn't create jobs and that the GOP is working to make an "environment ... to allow businesses to grow and prosper."
