KNOXVILLE (AP) – Tennessee coach Derek Dooley has added former Volunteers standout Jay Graham to his staff as a running backs coach.

Graham has spent the past three years as the running backs and tight ends coach at South Carolina, where he coached Marcus Lattimore. The sophomore had rushed for 2,015 yards and 27 touchdowns in a season and a half before being sidelined by a knee injury.

"Jay is not only one of the most accomplished running backs in Tennessee history, but he has also proven to be one of the top running backs coaches in the SEC," Dooley said in a statement. "Jay understands what it means to be a Vol, and we are thrilled to have him on our staff."

As a Vols tailback from 1993-96, Graham rushed for 2,609 yards and 25 touchdowns. His 1,438 yards rushing in 1995, which included 11 100-yard games, ranks as the second-best season in Tennessee history.

He was picked in the third round of the 1997 NFL draft by the Baltimore Ravens, where he spent three seasons, but was hampered by injuries. He also played for a season with the Seattle Seahawks and another with the Green Bay Packers.

Tennessee has not had a running backs coach under Dooley. Graham is filling a staff vacancy created when associate head coach Charlie Baggett, who also coached wide receivers, decided last week not to return for another season.

Baggett spent two seasons at Tennessee after a long career as an NFL and college assistant.

"I appreciate Charlie's contributions to the Tennessee football program during the last 22 months," Dooley said. "Charlie has made an incredibly positive impact toward our efforts to build a strong foundation for future success. He has had an excellent career as a coach, and I am grateful for his efforts during his time at Tennessee."
