Avery Named State’s Dentist of the Year

Dr. Jim Avery of the practice Avery & Meadows DDS has been named the 2011 Dentist of the Year for the state by the Tennessee Academy of General Dentistry.

Hometown: Born in Lima, Ohio, but have lived in Memphis all but two years of my life.

Education: B.A., economics, Vanderbilt University, 1973; pre-dental course work, University of Memphis, 1974; D.D.S., University of Tennessee College of Dentistry, 1978

Work experience: Instructor, University of Tennessee College of Dentistry, 1979-1980; private practice of general dentistry, 1979-present

Sports team: Vanderbilt football. Played there from 1969 to 1972, captain in 1972.

What activities outside of work to you enjoy? Flying – instrument-rated pilot – fitness, family.

What talent do you wish you had? Being a better piano player.

Who had the greatest influence on you? My wife, Karen. My professional and business partner, Dan T. Meadows, D.D.S.

What led you to become a dentist? I had a desire to be in a healing profession. Some very close friends encouraged me to take pre-med/pre-dental courses. I discovered that I truly like working with my hands and became enthralled with the art and science of dentistry. I love the relationship aspects of private dental practice, i.e., families that I treat on a regular basis, staff at the office.

What does it mean to you to be named Dentist of the Year by the Tennessee Academy of General Dentistry? It is a tremendous encouragement from an organization for whom I have the utmost respect. It, likewise, acknowledges the care, commitment and hard work that Dr. Dan Meadows and our incredible staff have put into providing the best dental experience possible.

What do you consider your greatest professional accomplishments? Earning the trust of a wonderful family of patients. Also, building a dental practice run by an organization of highly skilled and motivated staff with a vision of excellence in whatever they do.

What do you most enjoy about your work? Building smiles on the faces of patients that I have had the pleasure of treating and with whom I share long-term relationships. I enjoy learning more and more about the art and science of dentistry and what that means in providing the best dentistry available.

Dr. Glenn A. Crosby II, Robert M. Fockler and J. Brett Grinder have been named to the Memphis University School board of trustees.

Glassman, Edwards, Wyatt, Tuttle & Cox PC has been included in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2011 list of Best Law Firms for its expertise in the field of legal malpractice law for the defense.

Dr. Sanjaya Satapathy has joined Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute as a hepatologist. Dr. Vinay Ranga has joined the institute as a nephrologist.

Chet Winstead has joined Askew Hargraves Harcourt & Associates Inc. as a landscape architect. Arran Addington has joined the firm as a Tennessee Department of Transportation local programs/business development specialist. James Barrett has joined the firm as a construction field inspector.

Dr. Jared Wootton of Germantown has been named the Rising Chiropractor of the Year at the Tennessee Chiropractic Association Annual Convention & Expo in Murfreesboro. The award is presented to a Tennessee chiropractor within his or her first 10 years of practice who has contributed time and talent to the TCA, the profession and the community.

Martin, Tate, Morrow & Marston PC has been named by Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory as one of the nation’s Top-Ranked Law Firms. The list of leading law firms will be included in “Fortune” magazine’s 2012 Investor’s Guide, to be release Dec. 26.

Fred Lewis, a shareholder in the Memphis office of Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart PC, has been named 2012 Memphis Labor Law – Management Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in America.
