Stanton Picks Up For Gen Sessions Court Clerk
By Bill Dries
The interim General Sessions Court Clerk has pulled a qualifying petition to run for the office in the March Democratic primary.
Ed Stanton Jr. was appointed interim clerk in August after General Sessions Court Judges suspended clerk Otis Jackson following his indictment on four counts of official misconduct.
Stanton is the former head of the civil division of the clerk’s office.
He picked up his petition Friday, Dec. 2, the same day former Memphis City Council member Carol Chumney picked up a petition for the Democratic primary for District Attorney General.
Chumney and Stanton and other prospective contenders in the March county primaries have until noon Thursday, Dec. 8, to file with the Shelby County Election Commission.
Earlier this week, Jackson filed his qualifying petition for clerk and Shelby County Commission chairman Sidney Chism has also filed to run for clerk in the same Democratic primary.
Incumbent District Attorney General Amy Weirich filed last month in the GOP primary for the job of chief county prosecutor. Attorney Glen Wright has picked up a petition in the Democratic primary for District Attorney General.
