NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - U.S. Rep. John Tanner has been elected president of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, an organization made up of legislators from all 26 member nations.
After his election Tuesday during a meeting in Valencia, Spain, Tanner said it was their responsibility to collaborate on finding solutions to global problems.
Tanner recently led a delegation of House members to the assembly's meetings in Berlin and met with Gen. David Petraeus, the head of U.S. Central Command who oversees the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Tanner was first elected in 1988 and is a founding member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of 47 moderate to conservative House Democrats.
