Skinhead Charged In Obama Plot Wants Dismissal

A white supremacist charged with plotting a killing spree that would include President-elect Barack Obama wants his indictment dismissed, arguing that the federal grand jury that charged him had too many black members.

Daniel Cowart, 20, of rural West Tennessee and Paul Schlesselman, 18, of Helena-West Helena, Ark., are charged with threatening a presidential candidate, possessing a sawed-off shotgun, taking firearms across state lines to commit crimes and planning to rob a licensed gun dealer.

Authorities say Cowart and Schlesselman, who are described in court records as white supremacist skinheads, plotted a robbery and killing spree in which they would murder dozens of black people, including Obama.

Cowart’s lawyer, Joe H. Byrd Jr. of Jackson, Tenn., filed a petition Thursday seeking to have his client’s indictment dismissed.

The petition argues that the 23-member grand jury that returned the indictment had just two white members and could not have been fair and impartial.
