Les Miserables music opens Calvary series continues Wednesday Calvary Episcopal Church continues its 16th Calvary and the Arts concert and luncheon series Wednesday with an ensemble of edifying music. The series will continue through Dec. 6 with a free performance each Wednesday, excluding Nov. 22, at 12:05 p.m. at the church, located at 102 N. Second St. Each 30-minute concert will showcase the talents of a different Mid-South performing artist or ensemble with selections ranging from classical and Broadway show tunes to gospel and pops. "Heroic Music for Soprano, Trumpet and Organ," combines the talents of soprano Jennifer Bynum-Green, trumpet Lee Weimer and Calvary organist-choirmaster Thomas Pavlechko. The ensemble will perform music from European Baroque to New Orleans jazz. "Jennifer Bynum-Green has appeared on the series before. It was a gospel-type program," Pavlechko said. "This will be more of a classical program with trumpeter Lee Weimer and I. Were going to do Let the Bright Seraphim of Handel for trumpet and soprano and organ. The trumpet and organ are going to do Heroic Music. "It is All Saints Day, so were going to end with a rousing rendition, were not even sure what form its going to take, of When the Saints Go Marching In. Get ready to fly with the Seraphim and party with the saints." Calvary chef Emmett Bell will prepare the fare. "Im trying to talk him into doing some gumbo, he makes a really wicked gumbo," Pavlechko said. Following each concert, lunch will be offered at a cost of $5 per person. Lunch tickets may be purchased at the door. Lunches for the 2000 season will be catered by Calvary chef Bell and Downtown restaurants such as Hueys, The Rendezvous, Redbirds Plaza Cafe and McEwens. Other November performers include the Navy Band Mid-South Nov. 8, Southbound Nov. 15 and the Gary Beard Chorale Nov. 29. The season wraps up Dec. 6 with jazz virtuoso Kirk Whalum. Calvary and the Arts is a private, not-for-profit organization that receives funding from the Daily News Publishing Co., Tudor Investment Corp., the Greater Memphis Arts Council and Calvary Episcopal Church.
