2. Early Voting Tops 3,500 Through Saturday -

Early voting in advance of the July 16 election day in the six suburban towns and cities in Shelby County topped 3,500 through Saturday as the early voting period moves into the home stretch.

Voting on the municipal school districts referendum questions opened Saturday at sites in Germantown, Collierville and Bartlett resulting in the largest daily turnout since the early voting period opened June 26.

4. Panda Files Permit for Winchester Locale -

Panda Restaurant Group Inc. has filed a $791,345 permit application with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement to build a Panda Express at 7525 Winchester Road in Southeast Memphis.

The quick-service food concept Panda Express has entered the Memphis retail market on the city’s highest-trafficked surface street.

The Chinese restaurant chain will open a 2,665-square-foot new prototype store in Cordova in early September at 577 Germantown Parkway in front of Walmart Supercenter.

About half a dozen community meetings had been held and roughly 3,000 signatures gathered on a petition as of last week in an effort to stop the world’s largest retailer from building a new Supercenter in Cordova.

A new restaurant in the Cooper-Young neighborhood and a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Cordova are closer to reality following their respective approvals at last week’s Memphis-Shelby County Land Use Control Board meeting.
