16. Exeter Buys West Memphis Warehouse for $15.6 Million -

Pennsylvania-based Exeter Property Group has snatched up the Smucker’s distribution warehouse in West Memphis for $15.6 million.

The 600,000-square-foot facility was a foreclosed property from Bank of America, which was selling it with a year-end anticipated closing, said Matt Brodnik, Exeter’s director of capital markets.

Google has extended its Street View technology inside select shops and businesses around the country.

40. Penney Ups the Ante on Impulse Gifting -

J.C. Penney is upping the ante on impulse holiday gifting, with plans to carve out areas on the main floor dedicated to gifts from the whimsical to the practical.

The "Wrapt" shops, which will first be launched in its Manhattan store this week, followed by a national rollout in all 1,100 stores on Oct. 24, will carry about 300 items, mostly exclusive to J.C. Penney. They range from $3 chocolate candies from Dylan's Candy Bar to $40 mini speakers that plug into Apple's iPads or an iPods.

The Memphis condominium market is hoping to gain some positive momentum through the rest of this year thanks to historically low interest rates and decreasing condo supply across the city.

Condo sales in the Memphis area in 2011 are down 27 percent compared to 2010, with 310 sales through July this year versus 422 sales in the same time during 2010, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com.

Beale Street developer John Elkington is honored on the famous street’s Brass Note Walk of Fame.”

His place among Memphis music greats was announced with a flourish in Handy Park this week as Elkington prepared to close the books on a nearly 30-year run as the architect of the new Beale Street.

Corporate giving is alive in Memphis despite the economy.

That giving spirit has been seen in the work done by the Mid-South Food Bank, where emergency food is provided for an estimated 186,500 people annually. The Food Bank serves nearly 300 feeding programs in 31 Mid-South counties. So with all that food, it has to come from somewhere.

Judy Peiser has a good idea of how Memphians define Memphis, but the catch is that her definition lasts only one year at best.

This weekend, the Memphis Music and Heritage Festival, hosted by the Center for Southern Folklore, gives Memphians a chance to live Memphis’ identity and cultural legacy on the streets of Downtown.

First, the good news. The Institute for Supply Management’s (ISM) manufacturing index for July came in at 55.5, down from June’s level of 56.2, but still well above the expansion threshold of 50. July’s ISM non-manufacturing index also expanded at 53.8. Additionally, auto sales in July rose 5.1 percent from a year ago. Since September 2008, the only month that has seen a higher surge in sales was August 2009, which was a response to the “cash for clunkers” program.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Some homeowners who sign up for the government's mortgage assistance program are getting a nasty surprise: Lower credit scores.

For borrowers who are making their payments on time but are on the verge of default, the Obama administration's loan modification program can reduce their credit score as much as 100 points. That makes it harder to get a loan and can present a problem when applying for a new job.

RIPLEY, Tenn. – If this city in Northwest Tennessee wilted away on a vine, its demise would not be difficult to understand.

Few small cities and towns can survive the population stagnancy and jobs erosion that have beset Ripley. Fifty miles north of Memphis off U.S. 51 and the seat of Lauderdale County, Ripley has the state’s highest unemployment rate – 18.6 percent.

91. College Lite: Post-high school training programs – how do they rate? -

Jess Parrish used to say that when he started Shelby State Community College in 1970, he ran it out of the trunk of his car. His comment reflected the hard work it took to start a two-year college. Parrish also was acknowledging some of the perceptions about community colleges that exist to this day – eight years after SSCC merged with State Technical Institute to become Southwest Tennessee Community College, the largest community college in the state.

It’s taken about five years to pull together, and the result weighs in at more than 300 pages.

Later this month, public officials will take the first formal action toward approving a top-to-bottom rewrite of the more than 20-year-old rules that control land development in Shelby County.

95. MALS, Attorney General Sue Local Foreclosure Aid Org -

Memphis Area Legal Services and Tennessee Attorney General Robert Cooper Jr. recently filed eight lawsuits in Shelby County Chancery Court against the Tennessee Housing Protection Agency, claiming the foreclosure counseling and housing services organization “exploited” seven of its clients.

96. JCPenney Prepares to Open Centennial Commons Store -

J.C. Penney Co. Inc. is preparing to open a new store at Centennial Commons at 7700 Polo Grounds Blvd.

The official grand opening for the new JCPenney will take place Oct. 3, beginning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the store’s main entrance at 8:45 a.m.

97. Suburbs Power Tax Growth While City Idles -

The modest overall growth in Shelby County's tax base eked out over the past year was due by and large to strong real estate markets in the suburbs of Arlington, Collierville and Lakeland.

Certified property assessment figures released last week show that, over the past year, at least 300 new residential parcels of land came onto the tax rolls in all three cities. In each case, that residential growth brought between $20 million and $30 million in new taxable value.
