Tom Lowe, the president of one of the two out-of-town firms that own the roughly 10-acre Midtown landmark, said the developer’s contract to buy the south half of the square to pursue an overhaul will not be extended at the end of this month. That means a new Associated Wholesale Grocers Inc. store – which was to have been the key tenant of the square redevelopment – is likely not coming to the square anytime soon.

Oklahoma-based Sooner Investment has submitted its plan to overhaul the southern half of Overton Square to the Memphis-Shelby County Office of Planning and Development.

That step makes official the developer’s intentions for the square.
