The public hospital’s 2012 operating budget, whose total operating expenses amount to $306.8 million, includes 20 new and expanded programs, including salary increases for staff, trauma surgeon support and a culture development program to improve communication with patients and visitors.

The board of the Regional Medical Center at Memphis today will make a decision its leaders say they hope will put the hospital on the road to becoming more financially stable.

“We have just been fighting each year to scrape by, and the Blue Ribbon task force among others certainly acknowledged that that’s a path that leads to failure,” board chairman Gene Holcomb said in an interview with The Daily News after last week’s board meeting in which members chose the top two proposals. “And we can’t continue along that path.”
