As the market for brick-and-mortar bookstores lessens, the space that once housed big-box retailers could very well be snatched up faster than a paperback at a liquidation sale.

It was 40 years ago that the first Borders opened its doors in Ann Arbor, Mich., as one of the originators of the big-box bookseller concept. But much to local bookworms’ dismay, Borders will now be known as yet another bookseller to be defeated by the ever-increasing eReader revolution.

2. Poplar Plaza Bookstar Closing in January -

Barnes and Noble is shuttering another Memphis-area bookstore about a year after a previous closure.

Bookstar, a longtime tenant of the Poplar Plaza shopping center and one of Barnes and Noble’s brands, is closing at the end of January, according to The Commercial Appeal. That’s about a year after the nation’s largest book retailer announced the closure of the Barnes and Noble store at 6385 Winchester Road. David Deason, vice president of development at Barnes and Noble, told The Daily News at the time sales were “not sufficient to continue to operate” at Winchester.

3. Barnes and Noble to Close Winchester Location -

Citing a downturn in customer traffic, Barnes and Noble is closing one of its four Memphis stores at the end of this month.

The book retailer is shuttering its store in the Hickory Ridge Pavilion at 6385 Winchester Road after what will be its final day of business on New Year’s Eve.
