In 2012, Memphis Bioworks received a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Workforce Developmental and Job Training Program (EWDJT). The $300,000 grant issued provided training for 110 persons, 65 of whom already have been placed in full-time jobs.

A venerable shopping center in East Memphis could be getting a significant makeover, according to a recent retail market report from CB Richard Ellis Memphis.

Eastgate Center LLC, the owner of Eastgate Shopping Center at Park Avenue and White Station Road in East Memphis, could make significant aesthetic improvements to the retail center beginning this year.

6. First Lady Announces One-Stop Job Site for Veterans -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Aiming to streamline employment resources for people leaving the military, the government is creating an integrated website that can help job-seekers create resumes, connect with employers and become part of a database of veterans and their spouses for companies to mine for skills and talents.

Over the last several years, investors ranging from mom-and-pop shops to large hedge funds have been acquiring single-family homes in Memphis at a historic pace.

But determining the long-term impact that investor purchases have made on neighborhoods remains elusive.

Nashville-based Elmington Capital Partners apparently likes the apartment market in Downtown Memphis.

The University of Memphis is making the 10-year-old Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management an independent school within the university.

Less than a year after arriving in Memphis, LeSaint Logistics is already expanding its operations here.

LeSaint entered the market in July when it leased an initial 57,285 square feet at 3300 Jet Cove inside Memphis International Airport Center. LeSaint is expanding its footprint by 34,015 square feet, a 60 percent increase.

Memphis-based FedEx Corp. posted net income of $500 million, or $1.57 per share, in its fiscal second quarter, which ended Nov. 30.

Stock prices have increased more than 20 percent and U.S. home prices have increased nearly 15 percent. 27. Shelby County Mortgages Show Nearly 4 Percent Gain -

The mortgage market is starting to get interesting, in a manner of speaking. Earlier this month, interest rates for mortgages rose in what was described as the largest one-day jump in at least 10 years, according to Mortgage News Daily. That in large part stemmed from the Federal Reserve, which has been snatching up $85 billion worth of mortgage-backed securities a month.

Markets last week called Bernanke’s bluff and ended the second quarter on a high note. As we well know, Bernanke spooked markets with a timeline for dousing quantitative easing by mid-year 2014. Bond markets convulsed and the 10-year Treasury yield climbed from 1.61 percent to 2.67 percent. Why would Chairman Bernanke do such a thing?

WASHINGTON (AP) – The economy is recovering, the White House is dealing with multiple controversies, and President Barack Obama appears generally unaffected either way.

He's getting no significant uptick in approval from gains in housing, jobs and the stock market. Likewise, he has so far seen no downtick from the recent storms over the terror attack in Benghazi, Libya, the targeting of conservative groups by the IRS and a leak investigation that has swept up the phone records of Associated Press journalists.

Home sales activity picked up in the first quarter of this year across the Mid-South, and brokers believe the market recovery is gaining traction.

Shelby County home sales rose 6 percent during the first quarter, with 3,382 sales from January to March compared to 3,179 during the first quarter of 2012, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com.

Memphis Bioworks Foundation is working to renovate the old Holiday Inn building in Memphis Medical Center into a mixed-use facility.

Brandon Wellford, chief financial officer and director of real estate for Memphis Bioworks Foundation, said the vision is to redevelop the 12-story property with hotel space on the top; apartments for Memphis Medical Center students, staff and faculty in the mid-levels; and retail on the ground floor.

Montreal-based Olymbec USA LLC recently closed on its $1.5 million purchase of 3615 Lamar Ave. from an entity affiliated with Miami-based loan servicer LNR Partners LLC.

Office sublease space reached a record high in the first quarter, and local experts are forecasting even more leases from one lessee to another to hit the market prior to year-end.

Office subleasing totaled 600,664 square feet during the first three months of the year, according to Cushman & Wakefield/Commercial Advisors LLC’s Q1 office market report. That’s nearly 14 percent of total available space.

The closing of big-box stores in recent years belonging to the likes of Borders Group Inc., Circuit City Inc. and others has left suburban shopping centers around the country with lots of space to fill.

Come mid-July, local restaurateur Aldo Dean will launch Aldo’s Pizza Pies, his group’s third concept in Memphis and second in Downtown’s Central Business District.

Politics Returns Last week, politicians grabbed headlines and moved markets. First, stimulator-in-Chief Ben Bernanke goosed markets to multi-year highs by pledging his continued devotion to easy money. Thankfully, he has learned that “conversational easing,” simply talking about quantitative easing, achieves the desired result without the inflationary hangover of the act itself. The good news for the local hotel industry is that last year notched the most rooms ever sold on a daily basis with 4.8 million – 115,628 more than 2010 and 76,780 more than the previous high set in 2007.

Memphis-based collegiate housing company EdR has executed agreements with Landmark Properties to develop, own and manage a $36 million community near the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss.

The announcement comes Thursday, Feb. 23 – the same day EdR will release its fourth quarter financial results after market close.

83. Memphis in May Buys 56 S. Front for HQ -

Memphis in May International Festival Inc. has bought a 14,600-square-foot building at 56 S. Front St. for $250,000, with plans to move its headquarters to the site. It’s the third planned use for the site, which formerly was slated to be converted into a hotel and, later, into apartments.
