The 29th annual International Blues Challenge, the world’s largest gathering of blues acts, will convene in Downtown Memphis from Tuesday, Jan. 29, through Saturday, Feb. 2.
Blues acts will compete in Beale Street clubs and bars for a chance to perform in the finals on The Orpheum Theatre’s stage Saturday afternoon. The Blues Foundation, based at 421 S. Main St., hosts the yearly competition.

The first blow came more than 20 years ago – a big, upriver uppercut after a series of negative articles in The Commercial Appeal on St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The hospital hollered, another big river town heard them, and we were one feint away from losing St. Jude to St. Louis. We didn’t go down, rallied as a city and won the hospital’s decision to stay.

Blues Foundation Moves Into New Home -

The Memphis-based Blues Foundation has moved into its new home at 421 S. Main St., suite 104.
The move, which happened July 5, puts the foundation into a space most recently occupied by Public Storage. The foundation bought the retail portion of the Hotline Lofts three-story condo in December.

Next month, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and First Lady Crissy Haslam will present The Blues Foundation with the Governor’s Arts Award, Tennessee’s highest honor in the arts.
The award will be presented in a special ceremony produced by the Tennessee Arts Commission.

After more than 30 years of working out of temporary spaces, The Blues Foundation will finally have its first permanent home, the organization announced Monday. The space will serve the mission of Blues music preservation, celebration and education.
