Memphis City Council members got a first and at times conflicting look Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the hard decisions they could make about city spending on public safety.
Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. walked the council through some ideas for cuts in city spending beyond larger changes in city retirement and health benefits. Those obligations are the “cornerstone” of the efforts to get the city’s financial house in order, said city Chief Administrative Officer George Little.

ATLANTA (AP) - SunTrust Banks said Monday it will cut roughly 2,400 jobs, more than 7 percent of its total work force, by the end of next year.
The company, which said it doesn't expect its sales to be affected by the move, will incur a pretax, one-time charge of $45 million in the third quarter of this year to cover costs associated with the job cuts.

Formerly a reporter and managing editor at the Tri-State Defender, the city's black-owned newspaper, during the 1970s, Bradley currently is executive director of the Memphis Housing Resource Center (MHRC) at 2400 Poplar Ave., Suite 220. MHRC is a nonprofit organization in partnership with the city's Department of Housing and Community Development to educate potential homebuyers about the complexities of buying and keeping a home.
