The 12,072-square-foot Ballard Station strip center and gas station at 1990 W. Poplar Ave. in Collierville has sold for $1.8 million.

Nashville-based Elmington Capital Partners apparently likes the apartment market in Downtown Memphis.

An Elmington-affiliated company plans on building a 64-unit apartment complex at 362 S. Second St., south of FedExForum.

The owner of the 43,585-square-foot retail center at 783 W. Poplar Ave. in Collierville has filed a $1.5 million loan on the property.

10. Four Collierville Office Condos Sell for $900,000 -

Four office condos in the First Federal Place Condominiums on New Byhalia Road in Collierville have sold for $900,000.

Kia Investments LLC of Germantown bought the condos in a July 18 special warranty deed from BancorpSouth Bank, which foreclosed on the properties in May after the previous owner, L.T. Inc., defaulted on a $1 million loan dated January 2002.

12. Menu Stash Chronicles City’s Dining History -

Here it is, January 2012, marking 24 years that I have been reviewing restaurants and writing about the dining business in Memphis. Forgive me if I wax nostalgic.

I began saving menus from the restaurants I reviewed for The Commercial Appeal sometime in 1988; it took me a few months for me to understand that saving menus would provide reference points for restaurants that I might review in the future and, perhaps more vaguely then, that such a collection would amount to a history of my experiences, if not a narrative of the dining community and its transformations over time, not to put it too grandiosely.

It’s been almost a year since Louisiana-based Argent Financial Group, a diversified financial services company with more than $3 billion in client assets, opened a Memphis office.

16. Louisiana’s Argent Establishes Memphis Office -

Louisiana-based Argent Financial Group, a diversified financial services company with $2 billion in client assets, has opened an office in Memphis.

Argent, which operates one of the region’s oldest full-service independent trust companies, recently acquired Memphis-based Investment Counsel and Trust Co. Argent then hired several financial professionals from Regions Morgan Keegan Trust.

17. Highland Hip -

The Highland strip is growing a skyline. The Stratum on Highland Street, a five-story apartment complex, was the first new structure west of the University of Memphis to sprout last August on the storied commercial strip itself.

18. There Goes the Neighborhood: New hope emerges in one of Memphis’ roughest areas -

Hope and despair have co-existed for a long time along the stretch of Poplar Avenue between Danny Thomas Boulevard and Decatur Street. And for the past two years, the area has seen more change than just about any other inner-city avenue in Memphis.

For someone who had aspirations of becoming a writer, Circuit Court Judge Kay Spalding Robilio instead distinguished herself as a judge.

Robilio recently was among four Shelby County judges nominated for the Young Lawyers Division's (YLD) 2006 Charles A. Rond Memorial Award. She is the outgoing president of the Association for Women Attorneys and this month passed the gavel of the presidency to attorney Laurie Christensen. Winners of the Rond award will be announced next Thursday at the YLD's annual meeting starting at 4:30 p.m. at The Rendezvous Downtown.
